The Americas Cup comes to Plymouth
Welcome to the second stop on this year’s Americas Cup World Series in Plymouth from 10-18th September. With such a rich and wonderful sailing history being based out of this wonderful South Devon location, it’s simple to see why it’s been selected to host this most prestigious of events.
Plymouth’s history of sailing includes the ships of famous seafarers such as Captain Cook and Sir Frances Drake. Both set off from this famous maritime city to discover new parts of the globe, or hunt the Spanish Armada, and while ships may not leave Plymouth for quite the same reasons in the modern era, the wonderful Plymouth Sound (The harbour) still has many stories to tell!
The Americas Cup World Series are a number of events hosted throughout the world that will lead up to the 2013 Americas Cup, the oldest running sports competition in the world. The event in Plymouth is the second of 6 possible events that will be hosted as far afield as Portugal, Italy and the USA!
The nine teams will race in A45 catamarans, which are high speed, fast turning vessels that are sure to thrill and excite everyone who makes it along to watch.
Over 10,000 people have been lining the cliff tops of Plymouth harbour to see the first few days of the event, and the excitement of the racing seen so far has certainly impressed. With a whole host of entertainment available alongside the regattas themselves, anyone planning a day out to Plymouth for this brilliant event will not be left disappointed.
