Remember, remember …it’s the 5th of November next week and with seasonal celebrations in full swing, now is the perfect time to enjoy a break in the West Country. There’s an array of engaging events that take place throughout the South West in remembrance of the gunpowder plot – but perhaps none quite so spectacular as the Ottery St Mary Flaming Tar Barrels!
An ancient custom dating back to the 17th century, Ottery is now the only town in the UK to mark this autumnal occasion with full-sized lighted barrels. Each central pub sponsors a single barrel and often generations of the same family act as ‘Barrel Rollers’, tussling with other rollers in jest as they walk through the crowded streets of this beautiful and ancient town.
