War Horse Filmed in Devon
We’ve all been very excited about the buzz surrounding last week’s release of War Horse, not just because it’s sure to go down in cinematic history as yet another masterpiece by director Steven Spielberg but because part of the film (adapted from the novel by Michael Morpurgo) is set in Devon.
’War Horse’ follows the story of Joey, a plough horse and his devoted trainer Albert. When WW1 breaks Joey is sold to Captain Nicholls and deployed to war in France where Albert soon follows in a desperate attempt to locate his beloved friend …
Filmed on Ringmoor Down, Dartmoor it’s Spielberg’s first all British filmed production and it sounds like he was quite taken with our green and pleasant land as the director was quoted at Sunday night’s premier saying he “stretched the budget to go to Devon and it was worth every penny”. With its dramatic tors, rushing rivers and wooded valley’s it’s easy to see why Spielberg and his team were so captivated by the area.

…And War Horse wasn’t the only Hollywood movie to be filmed down here recently; scene’s from Brad Pitt’s zombie epic ‘World War Z’ were filmed in Falmouth whilst the hit novel ‘We Bought a Zoo’ based on Benjamin Mee and his family’s experience of buying Dartmoor Zoological Park is set for release soon. Starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson it’s directed by Cameron Crowe.
