Tintagel

Tintagel nestles along the rugged north Cornish Coast and the village is famous for its Arthurian Legends as it was said that King Arthur was born on Tintagel Island, linked to shore by a wooden bridge. The remains of the 13th century castle sit high above the Atlantic Ocean, a truly magical place. For over 800 years a tale has been told that Tintagel was the birthplace of the noble King Arthur, born to the beautiful Queen Igerna and protected by the magician, Merlin. The remains of the 13thC castle sit high above the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views and a fascinating history.

Tintagel has many attractractions including informative visitor centres, superb walks, good shops and numerous homely pubs. The village also features the Old Post Office which dates from the 14thC. It became a post office in the 19thC and is now run by the National Trust.

Due to the rugged coastline the beaches are small mainly coves close by, like Tintagel Cove & Bossiney Haven, and some are difficult to access. They do not have lifeguard cover and there are no dog restrictions. Trebarwith Strand is a large sandy beach backed by cliffs with caves and situated approximately a mile and half south of Tintagel. There is lifeguard cover in the summer months but no dog restrictions.

Between Boscastle and Tintagel, a short walk inland from the Coast Path is St Nectans Glen with its waterfall. Walk out to the Coast down Rocky Valley with its intriguing Iron Age carvings. An awesome spot in a winter storm so best avoided if a rough sea is running.

A variety of café, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants with locally produced food, all with superb locations.

Tintagel has an annual re-enactment of the famous battle of Camlann, where you can travel back in time when the Cornish were slaughtered by the King of Wessex and King Arthur was fatally wounded.
