Mullion is the largest village on the Lizard Peninsula and has a picturesque harbour that is protected from the seas by the two stout sea walls. Today this working harbour is a haven of peace and tranquillity, quite a contrast to its stormy past of smuggling and wreckers. In the past the main industry was pilchard fishing and you can still see the old pilchard cellar and net store. Most of the cliff and coastal grassland to the south is managed by the National Trust. The 15th Century church of St Mellanus is a focal point in the centre of Mullion village with its richly carved oak bench-ends depicting biblical scenes. Nearby is Poldhu Cove a sandy beach easily accessible and popular with surfers. Polurrian Beach is approached by an attractive walk along the cliffs or through a valley. There is lifeguard cover and also dog restrictions. Mullion has an array of interesting shops, inns, cafes, restaurants, craft shops and art galleries. |
