St Agnes is a wonderful picturesque village perched on a hillside overlooking Trevaunance Cove situated half way between St Ives and Newquay on the North Coast of Cornwall. The town is founded on tin mining and remains of the engine houses together with the rows of mining cottages still litter the landscape today. St Agnes Museum contains a fascinating array of artefacts about the varied history of the area’s mining and seafaring heritage. St Agnes is a good centre for arts and crafts with a wealth of galleries and art/craft shops to browse. An Arts and Crafts Trail Guide is available to help find your way. The beaches in and around St Agnes are varied with different features. Trevaunance or locally known as Aggie beach, is a sandy beach but completely covered at high tide. Chapel Porth beach is fairly rural and unspoilt and at low water you can walk to the next beach of Porthtowan, which is a great surfing beach. Trevellas Porth as mainly pebbles and not swimming is not recommended but when the sea is calm then Trevellas offers good snorkelling and fishing. St Agnes is the ideal location for those who enjoy walking. Whether short or long walks, coastal or inland, moderate or challenging, St Agnes can provide all of these, as well as spectacular scenery along the way. There are a number of designated National Trust walks as well as some adventurous off-the-beaten-track routes though woodland and valleys. |
