As the most westerly village in mainland England, you can be sure that Sennen is one of the most spectacularly beautiful coastal destinations in the country. With its sub-tropical climate, crystal clear water and white soft sand, Sennen Cove is understandably one of the main draws. Combined with the working fishing harbour, history of smuggling and connection to the South West Coast Path, a holiday in Sennen truly captures the essence of a blissful Cornish escape.
Golden sands and turquoise waters
Recognised for its cleanliness with a highly regarded Blue Flag, this beach is one of the best of its kind in Cornwall. Boasting a Mediterranean feel, it’s the perfect summer hotspot, especially for sunbathing. Ideal for families right through to groups of friends, there are plenty of opportunities for relaxing, sandcastle building and swimming in the pristine water.
Renowned for its surfing conditions, this beach is popular with surfers and draws crowds from afar. You’ll find a couple of surf shops and surf hire shacks dotted around the bay, as well as art galleries, souvenir shops and cafes for all your holiday needs and mementos of your Sennen holiday. Parents and grandparents won’t need to worry, as the beach is also lifeguarded during the summer. In fact, Sennen Cove was once home to the first canine lifeguard named Bilbo, who started his duties in 2008 but sadly had to withdraw due to safety regulations, although there are now a number of petitions to bring him back!
The beach itself is dog friendly throughout the winter months only, however Gwynver beach allows four legged friends all year round and is only a stone’s throw away. If you’re lucky, when visiting Sennen Cove you may be treated to the sight of dolphins out at sea, an amazing spectacle especially at sunset.
Uncover Sennen’s treasures
Food is often one of the most important aspects of a holiday, and Sennen will not disappoint as it boasts a restaurant which can provide a breathtaking dining experience. The award winning Beach Restaurant overlooks the bay and has a veranda which is perfect for sunny summer evenings.
Another great place to eat is that of the First and Last Inn, where you can enjoy delicious home cooked food in a 17th century pub that was once frequented by smugglers and ship wreckers. For even more fantastic local produce, make sure to visit the Farmers’ Market, which occurs every Tuesday.
Make sure to visit the Sennen Cove harbour during your stay too and watch as the local fisherman bring home their daily catch, which is a lovely sight to see in this small fishing community. Visitors are also welcome at the Lifeboat station, which has now been running for more than 150 years and boasts a new state of the art Tamar class lifeboat.
