Axminster

Situated on the summit of a hill overlooking the vast views of the river axe and its surroundings is the unspoilt and pleasant Devon market town of Axminster. Famous for its fine carpets and flooring since 1755 when the industry was originally started here, Axminster has gained a name for itself the world over for its synonymous top notch floor wear.

One of the town’s most prominent features is the fascinating Shute Barton Manor House, a National trust property, country house lovers alike will surely re-discover the life of this 14th century house. However one characteristic that sets this country house from others, is the Chaucer period fireplace, spanning a massive 22 feet wide and 7 feet high, this is thought to be England’s largest fireplace.

Based close to the borders of both Devon and Somerset, and only a 20 minute drive to the beautiful south coast of Devon with its golden sand beaches, Axminster is the perfect place to get around and take a look at the Westcountry. Take a short drive to the Jurassic coast where you can walkthrough millions of years of prehistoric history in a footstep, and absorb the breathtaking views of the coastline and English Channel.
