Okehampton, a medieval Devon town just to the North of Dartmoor, is an ancient market town which developed through the wool trade. The Pannier Market still exists here today. Historical architecture within the town includes the 15th century Chapel of St James and Okehampton Castle dating from Norman times. The Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton gives a good overview of the history surrounding this area. Nearby Dartmoor offers vast space and wilderness to explore with rugged tors and several unspoilt moorland villages, such as picturesque Folley Gate, Abbeyford Woods, Belstone and Sticklepath. Dartmoor offers plenty of outdoor activities including horse riding, cycling and walking not to mention fishing on the many rivers and reservoirs including Meldon, Fernworthy and Roadford. Okehampton is ideally located to explore Dartmoor, Devon and Cornwall. Simmons Park in the centre of Okehampton offers tranquil parkland with a variety of sport facilities including putting, bowling, tennis and squash. Ashbury golf course is nearby. There are a variety of pubs and eating places catering for every taste from traditional to modern; from continental to oriental and the town has a wide range of shops including local specialists, national retailers and supermarkets. Okehampton hosts a well-attended Agricultural Show in August and the carnival is in October. |
