Croyde is not only the renowned surf capital of the West Country but is also a beautiful quaint village of unique charm and character with its thatched cottages, rolling hills and the pretty stream that winds its way through to the idyllic sandy beach. The area surrounding Croyde is the perfect place for the outdoor adventurer with Baggy Point close by offering spectacular walks around the cliffs as well as specialised rock climbing. There are several pubs in and around Croyde, which offer good food and a select choice of restaurants, a Thai takeaway as well as cafes and tearooms. The village has a few surf shops, a gallery and craft centre and a few quaint gift shops. There are actually three fantastic sandy beaches to choose from Croyde Bay, Putsborough and Saunton Sands, all offering great bathing, surfing and swimming. The surfing at Croyde bay itself is not for the novice who should head for Saunton Sands and surf lessons are available in the area. Croyde beach holds the MCS Recommended UK award, Blue Flag International award and Encams Seaside Award. Lifeguard cover is provided from May to September and dog restrictions apply. Saunton Sands is another long sandy beach close by but there is no lifeguard cover. Dogs are generally allowed on the beach but kite buggies and sand yachts are prohibited. The famous Gold Coast Festival and O'Neil Surfing Fest take place in mid June and is now in its 9th year. |
