Westward Ho! - A Victorian seaside resort near Bideford in North Devon, is named after the famous Charles Kingsley novel “Westward Ho!” and it is the only place in the British Isles with an exclamation mark. Westward Ho! is famous for it’s miles of long sandy beach and backed by a pebble ridge, this huge expanse of beach is used for a host of activities including kite surfing, sand boarding, surfing, cricket, volleyball & much more. Situated next to Northam Burrows Country Park where horses and sheep graze, it offers 1000 acres of common ground and accommodates the famous Royal North Devon Golf Course – the oldest in England and Wales. To the west of Westward Ho! is a gorse covered hill known as Kipling Tors, which are named after Rudyard Kipling who used to reside in Westward Ho!. The Tors lead to a dramatic lookout point and a coastal path along the cliffs was previously an old railway track. The beach here has lifeguard cover in season and is one of the safest bathing areas in the area. Dog restrictions apply. The beaches of Saunton, Croyde and North Cornwall are also accessible from here. There are several pubs (some with late licenses) and restaurants including a Chinese restaurant in Westward Ho! So you should be spoilt for choice. There is also a selection of restaurants in nearby Appledore, which specialise in local fish. |
