Dartmouth is the Jewel of the South Hams. The beautiful town is one of the most splendid destinations in South Devon. Most popularly known for its seaport, the history of this small area dates back to prehistoric times, with its maritime events being documented for over 800 years, most famous is Dartmouth Castle. Set upon both riverbanks on the mouth of the river dart, the castles were the forefront of defence against the French in the Napoleonic Times. With a cobbled market place, and ancient narrow streets, Dartmouth retains much of its previous heritage, characterised by the many Elizabethan houses. Aside of the history of the town, Dartmouth boasts a large variety of specialist shops, where enthusiastic shopkeepers are experts in their field. From art galleries, delicatessens, boutique shops, to farmers markets and colourful stalls, Dartmouth is the perfect place for some relaxing retail therapy. For a bit more action take a drive to Woodlands Adventure Park, where even the bravest fear the Tornado toboggan run. At the end of the day visit the award winning restaurant, the laughing monk, wine and dine in perfect style, and take in the beautiful views across the water. Dartmouth has also been renowned for the main setting of Television series ‘Onedin Line’. |
