Launceston is an area steeped in history, with the 11th century castle dominating the town and giving stunning views across the medieval city gates. Once the site of the Royal Mint and the only walled town in Cornwall, Launceston will captivate you with it’s narrow streets of Georgian houses leading to the market square and 16th century church. It was once described by Betjeman as “the most interesting inland town in Cornwall”.
Approximately 15 miles North will take you to the superb sandy beaches and rugged coastline of the Atlantic coast. In the South you will find the gentler coast resorts of Looe & Polperro and charming little villages along the Tamar estuary.
In the town itself there are a small selection of pubs and restaurants offering a good variety of wholesome food. Within a few miles of the town you will find a selection of country pubs.
Launceston Steam Railway will take you on a journey from Launceston to New Mills. The four historic locomotives were built in the 19th century and today you can take a ride in open or closed carriages to take in the excellent countryside views.
Many sport and leisure facilities are available at the local clubs where you can enjoy golf, bowling, badminton and horse riding.
