For over 800 years a tale has been told that Tintagel was the birthplace of the noble King Arthur, born to the beautiful Queen Igerna and protected by the magician Merlin.
From the village a steep track takes you down through the Vale of Avalon to the legendary site of the atmospheric King Arthur’s Castle. Take a while to explore this fascinating ruin, at low tide you will also spot Merlin’s cave where you will find a hidden seam where smugglers used to hide.
The village also features the Old Post Office dating from the 14th century, which is now run by the National Trust and other National Trust treasures are within easy reach in this area.
Between nearby Boscastle and Tintagel, a short walk inland from the coastpath, is St Nectans Glen with it’s stunning waterfall. Walk out to the coast down Rocky Valley with it’s intriguing Iron Age carvings. In your travels you will also find an abundance of coves and inlets to be discovered. Nearby Trebarwith Strand is a large sandy beach backed by cliffs.
