Clovelly

Clovelly holidays

White-washed cottages cling to the steep hillside and the cobbled main street winds down to the picturesque harbour. Clovelly is peaceful and secluded, and it is a delight taking in the breath-taking coastal views, and maybe resting awhile, sitting at the harbour’s edge and watching the fishermen unload their catch.

There are a couple of traditional pubs in the village, where you can sample some of the locally caught fish. Take a trip around the harbour, and along the rugged coastline, the scenery is truly spectacular. If you're not feeling athletic, you can take a 4x4 ride back to the top of Clovelly, where the Visitor Centre is situated.

About Clovelly

Clovelly

Set into a steep hillside, Clovelly is a renowned fishing village, with one main cobbled street meandering down past the quaint and pretty cottages, mostly decorated with vibrant hanging baskets and flowers. It is traffic-free and you may therefore see the local postman or deliveries descending on a large sledge! The views out to sea, across to Lundy Island, are simply stunning, and the working harbour is a place where you can sit and relax and watch the world go by. The Red Lion is a perfect place to have some lunch, and where you can try some of the locally caught fresh fish, while sipping a glass of wine.

Clovelly was once home to the author Charles Kingsley, who penned Westward Ho! and The Water Babies, and the Kingsley Museum is worth a visit, where there are some interesting exhibits. A Maritime Museum can also be found, and pays homage to the local lifeboat station and its numerous rescues over the years. The steep climb back to the top may be too much for some, so why not take the 4x4 ride back to the summit, and to the Visitors Centre, with café and gift shop to browse.
