Once, one of the largest manors in Saxon times, and home to King Alfred the Great, Hartland is on the most North-Westerly peninsula of Devon, and is a peaceful, rural location with breath-taking views of the countryside. The town has a charming square, with craft and local shops, and the church of St John, built on the site of the old town hall.
You can enjoy the most spectacular views from Hartland Point and Quay, where its rugged cliffs and beautiful coves must be seen to be believed. The South West Coastal Path follows the dramatic coastline, and is the ideal path to view the wonderful vistas from the shore.
Hartland Abbey, once a monastery, is set in beautiful woodland and gardens, and home to the Stucley family. Fascinating guided tours can be taken around this stately home, and the gardens come alive in the spring, with a carpet of bluebells in the shady wooded areas. On warm sunny days, this is the perfect place to spend an afternoon, picnicking in the grounds, or why not sample a traditional Devonshire cream tea or delicious cake, made by the ladies of the local church.
