Tucked away down traditional Devon windy lanes and past picturesque thatched cottages, the tiny coastal village of Thurlestone is a hidden gem with all the facilities required for a perfect holiday in Devon. Renowned for its mild climate, protected by Dartmoor National Park to the north and sheltered with the warm waters of the gulf stream to the south, Thurlestone is an ideal holiday destination all year round.
The village takes its name from Thurlestone Rock; the so called thirled (pierced) stone, an arch shaped rock formation just off the shore in Thurlestone bay. A historic and pretty village the traditional 16th century ‘Village Inn’ is rumoured to be partly constructed with timber from the Spanish Armada and the village was first mentioned with its Saxon name – Torlestan in a charter of 846, the first record of a church there appears in the Domesday book of 1068.
With neighbouring villages of Bigbury, Salcombe and Kingsbridge a short drive away and access via the fantastic South West Coast Path walks across to Bantham in the west and Hope Cove in the east, Thurlestone really is the perfect retreat for a fantastic holiday in the beautiful South Hams area of Devon.
