Offering miles of sandy beach along its vast coastline, Weston-Super-Mare still retains its standing as one of the South West's most popular seaside resorts. With a level promenade that boasts superb views across the Channel, it's conveniently situated for exploring the surrounding areas of Wells, Bath and Bristol; the town of Cheddar with the famous Cheddar Gorge is also within easy reach. Featuring a clean sweep of sandy beach, the area is attractive to families who enjoy its traditional seaside appeal.
The resort has been popular since the early 19th century when the railways were built, giving easy access to local towns and cities and making Western-Super-Mare a bustling destination throughout the Victorian era, when the town doubled in size. Visitors made the most of its low tide which sits a mile from the seafront and offered the perfect opportunity to safely paddle.
The same large stretch of beach now has a designated area for water sport enthusiasts, who can indulge in a range of different activities, including surfing, canoeing and windsurfing and you can even take a boat ride around Weston Bay or further afield. There are a number of family-friendly activities also situated nearby; including SeaQuarium, the North Somerset Museum and the world's largest dedicated Helicopter Museum.
Following a devastating fire that completely destroyed the pavilion in 2008, Western-Super-Mare's grand pier (the largest of its two pier's) had to be re-built and is now an indoor theme park with world-class attractions that can be enjoyed throughout the year. With 3D cinema, rides, games and a number of restaurants and cafes, there's plenty to enjoy.
