Principally rural, the Lake District is one of the most spectacular areas of natural beauty in the whole of the UK, with an abundance of things to do, attractions to see and places to eat, but surely nothing beats an afternoon tea for two?

Afternoon tea is a quintessential classic lunch time dish in English culture. A delectable treat exuding sophistication and facing increasing popularity, once a staple part of the traditional English person’s diet, now a fashionable three tiered craze; English Breakfast or Darjeeling? Warm scone or slice of lemon drizzle? Whatever your taste, a delightful treat is awaiting you.

The Lake District is bursting with pretty tea rooms! We give you our top five tantalizing tea rooms in which to enjoy your scrumptious cream tea.

Rattle Gill Café

Nestled up a steep lane alongside Stock Gill water cascade is the most delightful little tea room. Rattle Gill Café offers up the perfect balance between the traditional classics you would expect to find in an eatery as quaint as this, and more modern dishes with a twist. If you are heading here looking for some vegetarian meals then you are in luck, the roast vegetable, brie and chutney panini will delight! The owners pride themselves on their wholesome home cooked goodness with everything being cooked on site – and in decent portions too!

Poppi Red

This quaint Cumbrian café located in the charming village of Hawkshead has a warm and welcoming ambience with the most beautiful décor. With perfectly shabby chic accessories, from floral aprons hung on the walls to rainbow striped tea pots and quirky plates it certainly makes for a unique visit. Serving up scrumptious cakes, freshly ground coffees, a vast selection of tea and sandwiches and paninis using bread from a local artisian bakery. It is the perfect spot to warm up in the cold, or for a refreshing glass of Pimms in the warm summer months.

Low Sizergh Barn Tea Room

Just on the outskirts of the Lake District, near Kendal you will come across Low Sizergh Barn Tea Room which has been lovingly converted from a rustic barn into a unique tea room with views over the onsite milking shed – you can even see the cows being milked at 3.30 daily! This is definitely one for the chocoholics among us, the most perfect holiday indulgence you could possibly find in the Lake District! The Country Hut is set in the heart of Bowness-on-Windemere, a lovely modern café and wine bar specialising in meats, cheese, coffee and wine. Their real focus is on quality produce which most definitely comes across in the dishes served, the large ploughman platters are their speciality, and are served with a side of artisian bread, giving the option of either meat or cheese, both are impressive in both quantity and quality.
