Breakfast and cafes in Chipping Campden

There are many places to grab a bite of breakfast in Chipping Campden, so highlighting just one has proven difficult. Lots of places to eat in Chipping Campden offer breakfast as part of their menu but we’re choosing eateries that take breakfast seriously.

Bantam Tea Rooms

Bantam Tea Rooms are so serious about breakfast, in fact, that they serve it all day (well, until 3.30pm at least). It’s all cooked fresh to order too, so you won’t turn up at quarter past three and get bacon and sausages that have been sitting idly in a bain-marie.

Situated on the high street, Bantam’s is a hub for rendezvous as locals and tourists alike flock to the comfortable honey-hued stone interiors. If the weather is fine, the gardens are equally stunning, surrounded by pretty flowers and amber architecture.

This family-run business serves up classic English breakfasts alongside omelettes or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast. Don’t forget that it’s never too early for a slice of homemade cake; either choose a wedge from the cake window or indulge yourself with an afternoon tea which, paradoxically, is served from 9.30am (more on afternoon teas later in this guide).

Other cafes in Chipping Campden

  • Café Huxleys – another family-run café set in a 500-year-old building with a moreish breakfast menu
  • Butty's at The Old Bakehouse – friendly staff, breakfast sandwiches and eat-in or takeaway options … what more could you wish for from a café in Chipping Campden?
  • Campden Coffee – pet friendly and with space to park your bike, this place is great for a breakfast pit stop

Afternoon tea in Chipping Campden

You’re on holiday so why not treat yourself to a little extravagance? The Cotswolds seems like it was made for afternoon tea, with its gorgeous rivers and picture postcard villages. And if you haven’t got a huge appetite, why not just settle for one of the best cream teas in the Cotswolds instead?

Two images: a lady's hand taking an exquisite cake from an afternoon tea stand; dry loose-leaf tea being poured into a glass jug

Cotswolds House

Afternoon tea should always be enjoyed somewhere flamboyant in our opinion and Cotswolds House has exuberance and vibrance in just the right measure. Come take a seat in the Grade II-listed Regency townhouse and pop through to the Fig lounge or the bistro where wonderful views are to be had from every window, be it the rolling Cotswolds hills or the classic stone buildings.

This afternoon tea in Chipping Campden will live long in the memory; not only is the food exquisite and locally sourced but so is the china and silverware. Spoil yourself with sandwiches, cakes and other sweet treats, accompanied perfectly by a loose-leaf tea. If you’re feeling extra naughty, why not add a glass of Champagne or a Cotswolds gin and tonic to make the day even more special?

Booking is advised here and afternoon tea is served from 2pm until 5pm. You’ll have the choice of the interior with a roaring log fire in the winter months or the seclusion of the expansive gardens and the hidden terrace in the summer.

Pub food and Sunday lunch in Chipping Campden

Sometimes, after a long (or short) walk meandering around a picturesque Cotswolds village, there’s nothing more you want than sitting down to some good, honest pub grub. Luckily, Chipping Campden’s pubs are amongst the top pubs in the Cotswolds and we've even included one a little further afield that features in our list of top dog-friendly pubs in the Cotswolds.

Eight Bells Inn

One of the best pubs in Chipping Campden, the Eight Bells Inn sits in the heart of the town, on a terrace of similarly coloured houses – you might even mistake it for just another pretty Cotswolds residence. On closer inspection, however, this gastropub has much more to it.

Established in the 14th century, this traditional English inn has stone floors and open fires inside and a courtyard and garden outside, meaning you are well served no matter what time of year you visit. Featuring in the nation’s top food and pub guides is common for this pub and the staff pride themselves on excellent service and first-class, locally sourced food.

Open from 12 noon, with a break around mid-afternoon (except Sunday) so they can prepare for the evening’s service, you’ll have plenty of time to find a spot and peruse the menu. Bookings are welcome but if you’re waiting for a table having not booked, just spend the time sampling the handpicked selection of locally brewed beers.

Da Luigi Bistro

Okay, we’ll be honest, there’s only one Italian restaurant in Chipping Campden but to be fair, it’s a corker. With wooden flooring and Cotswold stone walls complemented by authentic Italian touches here and there, Da Luigi Bistro gives off a genuine Italian vibe from the moment you’re warmly welcomed through the door.

The pasta is homemade and the pizzas are wood-fired meaning there’s no need to visit the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ to get a true taste of Italy. Booking is advised but once you’ve reserved your table, you can sit back and go on a culinary journey, savouring the chef’s specialities such as costoletta d'agnello (lamb chops) and branzino all’acqua pazza (seabass fillet in cherry tomato sauce) both served with sautéed potatoes and vegetables or more renowned dishes like seafood linguine, penne arrabbiata, and capricciosa pizza.

The restaurant can accommodate groups of all sizes in case you have a special occasion to celebrate, and if you just fancy eating in the comfort of your self-catering holiday home, you can take advantage of their click-and-collect takeaway menu. Buon appetito.

The Maharaja

This Indian restaurant in Chipping Campden is housed within the Volunteer Inn, making it, in our opinion, one of the best pubs in the Cotswolds. When you visit the Maharaja, you know that you’ll be experiencing Asia at its exotic best, with chefs using the finest ingredients and age-old methods to bring you first-class Indian cuisine.

The menu holds all the regular favourites you’d expect from a popular Indian restaurant; however, the chefs are flexible and are always pushing the boundaries with new and exciting dishes that might be available if you ask. The interior has accents of Indian authenticity alongside staple Cotswold stone giving you a warm welcome as you sit down with your friends and family.

Finish off next door in the pub where there are regular quiz nights, poker nights and other events. And if the evening is balmy, enjoy your digestif in the pleasant beer garden whilst watching a live football, rugby and cricket match on the outdoor TV screen.

Crystal Palace

For fresh and delicious Cantonese and Chinese cuisine, there’s really only one option (literally). Crystal Palace on Sheep Street is open six days a week, even on bank holidays, and offers all the traditional meals you’d come to expect from a classic Chinese takeaway.

However, if there’s a dish not on the menu that you have a hankering for, please ask a member of staff who will be happy to oblige. The takeaway restaurant also caters for vegetarians and if you’ve had your fill of the Orient, you can always order from their fish and chips menu which also includes savoury pies, nuggets and burgers.

Please do note that they only accept cash so head to an ATM beforehand, as there isn’t another Chinese restaurant in Chipping Campden.
