Springtime in the UK FAQs
According to the Met Office, the first day of spring is dependent on whether you are following the astronomical or metrological calendar.
The meteorological is the simpler of the two because it splits the year into four seasons of three full months, each based on the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, the start of spring in the UK will always be 1 March every year.
The astronomical calendar is less straightforward as it depends on the date of the spring equinox when day and night are almost exactly the same length. This means the date comes later and can vary slightly from year to year. In 2022 for example, it takes place on 20 March.
Whichever calendar you choose to follow for spring dates, the season always falls over March, April and May. This is when the temperature in the UK begins to rise and the days get longer.
