Items to pack for your working farm holiday

Pack light is the mantra for most holidays, but when holidaying in the UK you can indulge in the added luxury of avoiding those pesky luggage weight limits and being able to pack more – and with children in tow this can be a massive relief!

However, packing savvy is still high on our agenda, so to ensure you can fit all your necessities in your car, we have compiled a list of the essentials you will need to remember to pack to fully prepare you for your working farm holiday! More inspiration can be found from our library of useful blogs about working farms in England on subjects like family-friendly fun, a guide to farm markets, and a half-term feature on farm cottages for all the family.

Wellington boots

British weather does not always present us with the sunniest of conditions but that should never give you an excuse to put off that countryside walk you have been planning. Packing a good pair of wellies or hiking boots will prepare you for any kind of terrain whether that’s muddy hills and fields or rocky coastlines, those socks will stay nice and dry.

Coat and umbrella

To avoid getting caught in an unexpected downpour while exploring the surrounding areas of the working farm you are staying on, make sure to pack a warm and waterproof coat and a sturdy umbrella. Being able to focus on the beautiful views rather than how wet you are is important to appreciate the countryside environment to its fullest.

Picnic and accessories

Picnic and accessories

No countryside walk is complete without stopping at a scenic picnic spot on the way to experience some al fresco dining. Instead of opting for the car and heading to a restaurant or café for some food, why not get in touch with nature and eat amongst it?

To ensure a pleasant dining experience make sure to pack a filling lunch and refreshments, a picnic blanket to prevent muddy clothes, along with picnic cutlery, plates, and cups.

Binoculars

Binoculars

Many of our working farm cottages are situated in the vast, open countryside making it the perfect home for some extra inhabitants. When spotting that deer running across the fields, you want to get a good look at it, so packing a pair of binoculars is an important accessory when going wildlife spotting. Binoculars also come in handy when wanting to admire the spectacular panoramic views likely to be surrounding you.

Camera

Capturing those treasured holiday memories is crucial, so remembering: packing a camera in your suitcase is a must. Whether it’s seeing your children feed a baby lamb or seeing baby ducks pass along the road in front of you, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to take a quick snap.

Apps

Apps

For the tech-savvy amongst you who wouldn’t venture out anywhere without your mobile phone in hand, why not use it to its advantage and download some appropriate apps to assist you when venturing out and about during your working farm holiday?

Try your hand at geocaching – a fun activity that provides you with clues and GPS coordinates in order to lead you to items. If you are looking for more of an educational experience then downloading one of the many wildlife apps on offer can also make for a rewarding experience.

Suncream

If you’re heading out to enjoy the sunshine, one of the most important things to take with you is a bottle of suncream, and make sure there’s plenty to go around. An overcast sky or a leaf-covered path can be deceiving, you can still get burnt so don’t forget this essential holiday item.
