They may have only just got used to writing 2017 in the top corner of their notebooks, but you can bet your life that your little ones are already looking forward to February half-term.
With just one short week (in most cases) to give them enough excitement to last them through until Easter, you’ve got your work cut out!
How can you make sure that February half-term 2017 is the best ever? We’ve put ourselves into a seven-year-old's shoes (not literally) to bring you our top suggestions to guarantee your February holidays are full of smiles!
It won’t be long before your little monsters are far more preoccupied with friends and trends than spending time with the oldies! While a family holiday is still an exciting prospect, make the most of their time off school to get away together. It doesn’t have to cost the earth, in fact, a UK cottage break for a family of four can easily work out at less than £300 for a week.
It needn’t be a mission to the opposite end of the country either, sometimes the most fun is to be had just down the road. I spent many family holidays as a child under an hour away from my home so that my Dad was able to work for a couple of days without missing out on the fun.
Rainy day activities
Most parents are all too familiar with the obligatory half-term trip to an indoor play centre to keep spirits high on even the greyest of days. If you’re off on your holidays it’s good to scope out under cover activities for your itinerary before you go, which is where our ‘Things to do’ search can help.
But for those moments where you need a little something to keep them occupied while you relax with a cuppa or two, our printable children’s activity sheets are sure to go down well. From holiday diaries to car games and colouring sheets, simply download and print them before you go and whip them out as that bottom lip starts to wobble!
Tire them out
When the weather is fine, not only will outdoor activities leave them with great memories to talk about with their classmates, but also (fingers crossed) will tire them out for a good night’s sleep. Walking may not be the first thing which springs to mind for an afternoon with the tots, but there are so many family-friendly trails where you can stretch your legs and look out for interesting bits and bobs along the way.
For older children, February half-term is a great opportunity to try their hand at something new. From learning to ride a bike to riding a horse for the first time, there are so many new experiences out there which could be the start of a lifelong hobby!
Time for you
When we say make February half-term 2017 the best ever, we don’t mean just for your children!
While hotel holidays can often find you housed in one small ‘family’ room, in a holiday cottage you’ll have plenty of space to make the most of those precious moments of peace when the little people have gone to bed. Relax with a glass of wine, curl up in front of the wood burner or even take an evening dip in your own private hot tub – the perfect way to recharge your batteries for the next day’s outing with the family.
Whether you’re planning ahead or looking for last minute breaks, we have a fantastic range of family-friendly cottages to set you well on your way to making this half term the best ever!
