Marvel (MCU) filming locations in the UK

How important are films to you? There are some of us that have had their lives changed by seeing films at the cinema or at home. There's a whole subculture to immerse yourself in, worlds within worlds, genres to suit all tastes. A joyful aspect to enjoying films is visiting the filming locations where the magic took place! For over the last decade a series of action films based on the 1960s (onwards) Marvel comic characters has gone on to alter the landscape of cinema as we know it.

As of early 2022, there has been 27 films to date featuring the likes of The Incredible Hulk, Spiderman, Iron Man, Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America, Thor, and Ant Man. Some of these blockbusters have been partially lensed in the UK. One of the latest movies, The Eternals, was shot in Camden, London, Hampstead Heath, and Windsor, for instance. Grab onto our cape and cross the multiverse to discover where in the UK, some of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have been filmed.

Marvel film locations in Durham

Durham - Avengers: Infinity War

Durham was awash with Hollywood stars when a pivotal scene from Avengers: Infinity War was shot at Durham Cathedral. Tom Holland (Spiderman) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) were spotted being driven to the cathedral for filming back in May 2017, while the directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, were filmed being interviewed in the cathedral cloisters. In the finished film, we see the cathedral when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) travels back to a ruined Asgard.

Things to do in Durham: Durham Cathedral tour, Beamish Air Museum, The Bowes Museum, A Ghost Tour, Dark Skies (Durham), High Force Waterfall, Odeon Luxe Cinema

Marvel film locations in Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh - Avengers: Infinity War

Next, we head further into Scotland - a country that has provided much visual inspiration for the producers of the MCU movies. In Avengers - Infinity War, the city of Edinburgh was used in a fight sequence structured like a horror film according to the film's directors, the Russo Brothers. Various scenes take place at Waverley Train Station and on Cockburn Street. The featured actors included Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Anthony Mackie (Falcon). You may have noticed that Iron Man wasn't in either of those scenes. We think he was probably cooling his jets at a place like the magnificent Arthur's Seat Imperial Heights, with dramatic views overlooking Holyrood and Arthur's Seat. This lavish penthouse apartment would be perfect for Robert Downey Jr’s character Tony Stark/Iron Man, who loves the high life!

Things to do in Edinburgh: Edinburgh Festival (August), Royal Edinburgh Tattoo, visit Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, Holyrood Palace, The National Gallery of Scotland, Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh Film Festival (August), shops galore!

Stay nearby: The Cooperage | Sleeps: 2 guests + 1 dog

Marvel film locations in Scotland

Both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame were filmed at the dramatic cliffs of St Abb’s Head, Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders. Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Elizabeth Olsen, Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson are in scenes that appear in both films. Culross in Fife was used as a chief location in Captain America: The First Avenger starring Chris Evans. There's enough beauty and history to evoke the fantastical vibes of Doctor Strange, and mystique of The Eternals all across the south of Scotland. There's much to discover from the Mull of Kintyre, to Glasgow, to Melrose, and North Berwick!

Things to do in the Scottish Borders: Get married in Gretna Green, visit Hadrian's Wall, The National Wallace Monument, Melrose Abbey, Scott's View

HampshireMarvel film locations in Hampshire

Hampshire - Avengers: Age of Ultron

Hampshire appeared in Avengers: The Age of Ultron. During a key scene in the movie, Hawkeye (Renner) retires from the Avengers with the aim of starting a safer life with his family. But did you know that his lovely farmhouse was close to Reading (in Berkshire) tucked deep inside the alluring estate of Stratfield Saye? Close to the border with West Berkshire, it's a lush and green area of the country famed for its ancient oaks and wild meadows. You aren't far from the winding River Thames if you are planning to stay near Stratfield Saye. You have access to The Cotswolds, London, and the rolling, empty countryside of Wiltshire to the west with its ancient stone circles

Things to do in Hampshire: Visit Jane Austen's House, Lepe Country Park, Staunton Country Park, Fleet Pond, Hurst Castle, Winchester Cathedral, go sailing on The Solent

Marvel film locations in Kent

Kent - Avengers: Age of Ultron

At the beginning of The Age of Ultron, the Avengers are seen breaking into the bad guys’ fortress. These scenes were filmed in Hampshire, Surrey, Kent... and Italy! It’s Kent that we’re concentrating on though, as the Dover Castle Tunnels were used to depict the secret entrance to the villainous Hydra’s base. Dover Castle is open to the public and you can visit the tunnels of this iconic fortress set high on a hill overlooking the English Channel. It has played an important role in defending the British coast from invaders for hundreds of years. A day trip with a tour is well worth your time, especially in the context of seeing a cool scene from The Age of Ultron.

Things to do in Kent: Visit the White Cliffs of Dover, Chatham Historic Boatyard, RSPB Dungeness Nature Reserve, Sound Mirrors, Folkestone Burrows, Dreamland

Marvel film locations in Norfolk

Norwich - Avengers: Age of Ultron

You may have thought the Avengers' new training facility in The Age of Ultron was a secret spot in the USA somewhere. It is, in fact, the futuristic-looking Sainsburys Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich. Open to the public, this amazing modern art gallery is home to a sculpture park and a platform to showcase the best abstract art in the East of England. There is a great variety of permanent and touring collections on display here. You can almost imagine some of the paintings and prints on the walls of Tony Stark's house.

Marvel film locations in Liverpool, North of England

Liverpool - Captain America: The First Avenger

Do you remember those early scenes in Captain America: The First Avenger, when Steve Rogers is chasing some bad guys through Brooklyn, New York? Well, that wasn't Brooklyn, it was Liverpool. Dale Street was used to depict your average New York neighbourhood where the baddie's base was found, while Stanley Docks, once the world's largest brick building, is where the chase ended. Stanley Docks isn't open to the public and largely derelict with plans to convert it into apartments, but it can still be admired if you drive all the Docks Road. Dale Street is at the heart of the city's business district and can be distinguished by the impressive old mercantile buildings all along its length. It's not far from The Cavern Club and the city's famous waterfront.

Things to do in Liverpool: Visit The Three Graces, Albert Dock, the Pier Head, Sefton Park, Brookside Close, Croxteth Country Park, New Brighton, Crosby Beach, Formby Sands

Buckinghamshire - Captain America: The First Avenger

Staying with Steve Rogers’ 1942 world, his army training camp Camp Lehigh was really located in Black Park in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. The park, which also doubled for many a European battlefield and American army camps, backs onto Pinewood Studios a major British film studio where production and filming of several other Marvel movies, including Infinity War, has taken place. Black Park is open to the public and has a large lake at its centre, while much of the park is given off to long avenues lined with acres of evergreen pines and fir trees. There is also a pleasant cafe and you can even swim in parts of the lake or take your toy boats! Black Park is hugely popular on weekends (all year round) so arrive early if you want a parking space.

Things to do in Buckinghamshire: Visit Windsor Castle, Ivinghoe Beacon, Ashridge Estate, Chiltern Open Air Museum, Dorney Court, Bletchley Park, The Roald Dahl Trail

Stay nearby: Woodlands House | Sleeps: 12 guests + 2 dogs

Marvel film locations in Oxford

Oxford - Doctor Strange

Some of Doctor Strange's scenes were shot in Oxford at Oxford University? Perhaps that's not surprising considering the film-making heritage the city has nurtured over the decades. Oxford is a fantastic town to visit for a city break as there is so much to see. Be inspired to follow Doctor Strange and visit libraries that resemble his Kamar-Taj library, perhaps you can learn to be a sorcerer too! Spend time on a punt, gliding along the river, or in between walking around Oxford's hushed academic avenues you can enjoy some shopping in the city's many shops.

Things to do in Oxford: Visit The Bodleian Library, The Radcliffe Camera, The Ashmolean Museum, The Pitt Rivers Museum, the 28 colleges, Oxford Castle
