The Cooperage: showing the living space, the bedroom and the exterior

The Cooperage, Edinburgh and Lothians

Sleeps 2 guests + 1 dog

Why we love it:

Starting in Scotland, we have this charming riverside retreat that’s set within a converted 18th-century warehouse. The Cooperage sits right on the cobbled wharf at Leith Docks, meaning you can open your patio doors and immediately wander the banks of the river. There are shops, bars and restaurants right on your doorstep too in case you don’t feel like cooking one night. When you return, you’ll have comfortable furniture to sink into as you admire the views from the dual-aspect living room.

Why our guests love it:

The location is perfect for everything in Edinburgh, with excellent transport on buses and trams. The apartment is very comfortable for two with the addition of a good parking facility. Highly recommended and we will hopefully return.” – Josephine, 2023

The Bathing House: showing the bedroom, the living room/diner, and a view of the house and the coast

The Bathing House, Craster & Embleton

Sleeps 6 guests + 2 dogs

Why we love it:

If, like us, you love a bit of political history, a stay at The Bathing House is a must, as 200 years ago, this was the preferred seaside retreat of a former Prime Minister. Now a 5-star holiday home, this Grade II-listed cottage is as detached as they come, meaning you get the serenity of this exceptional stretch of coastline all to yourself. If you can drag yourself away from the panoramic views offered by the cliffside location, you’ll be humbled by the cosy cottage interiors of the downstairs living space (complete with a warming wood burner) and the spacious grandeur of the upstairs bedrooms (one of which has views of Dunstanburgh Castle).

Why our guests love it:

The Bathing House is a wonderful combination of outstanding location and top-quality accommodation.” – Tessa, 2023

Larch Cottage: showing the exterior, the living room and the kitchen

Larch Cottage, Rothley

Sleeps 4 guests + 2 dogs

Why we love it:

Staying in Northumberland but moving inland, Larch Cottage is no less secluded than our previous selection – if you like your holidays tranquil and remote, Northumberland seems to be the place to go. This single-storey lodge is built with beautiful yellow stone with some wooden cladding to give it a slight Scandi feel. The inside is truly marvellous. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer far-reaching views, so sit down in the spacious open-plan living area and fire up the wood burner. The décor offers bright colours with wooden touches here and there, and the skylights above the kitchen are perfect for a little stargazing while cooking dinner.

Why our guests love it:

“Excellent choice for us, if you want peace and quiet with stunning views look no further. The cottage is well appointed with quality fittings and furniture, beautiful throughout, and plenty of space. It was noticeable how clean the cottage is. Nice welcome pack for humans and doggies alike.” – David, 2023

Butterfly Cottage: showing the living room and kitchen, the bedroom and an exterior image

Butterfly Cottage, Keswick

Sleeps 2 guests + 1 dog

Why we love it:

Whisk your loved one away for a special holiday today to Butterfly Cottage, one of our most-booked properties of 2023. Cosy up together in this romantic property in front of the wood burner after exploring the many nearby walking trails through the spectacular Lake District National Park, share memorable meals together in the enclosed patio, or enjoy long and lazy lie-ins in the sumptuous king-size bed.

Why our guests love it:

Very comfortable well-equipped cottage. The perfect base for a couple to explore the northern Lakes. The location is fantastic – walk out the door and you're less than 100 metres from the very heart of the town. And yet, it's such a quiet, out-of-the-way place, you would never know. We come back time and time again and highly recommend it.” – Dave, 2023

Deer Close Cottage: showing the living room, an incredible view of the mountains, and an exterior image of the cottage

Deer Close Cottage, Borrowdale

Sleeps 2 guests

Why we love it:

The Lake District is a wonderfully romantic destination; a stay in this enchanting Lakeland cottage will no doubt sweep both of you off your feet. This traditional stone retreat is set in the serene Borrowdale Valley, close to Derwentwater for fabulous waterside walks, but also proximal to Keswick if you want to visit a vibrant market town to pick up a gift or two. Return to your cottage and choose from two stone terraces as you sip on some bubbly. The photographs don’t do the scenery justice; the views are absolutely spellbinding.

Why our guests love it:

“What a fantastic cottage, we've been coming to the Lakes for 5 or 6 years now and this must be the best cottage we've stayed at. Fantastic location, fantastic views, fantastic wildlife in the garden, the owner has gone above and beyond to make the stay comfortable, can't wait to go back.” – Robert, 2023

Brewery Barn: showing the outdoor furniture and hot tub, the living room with a double-width wood burner, and an exterior image of the cottage

Brewery Barn, Richmond

Sleeps 2 guests + 1 dog

Why we love it:

Where to start? This attractive stone-built property has so much going for it. It’s incredibly spacious for two guests and the vaulted ceilings and exposed wooden beams make it seem even more capacious. Settle on either sofa and throw another log on the double-width wood burner while your other half whips up a meal in the kitchen that occupies the same open-plan space. Head up to the mezzanine double bedroom or slip into the free-standing bath and pop your latest read on the bath book holder. In the morning, have breakfast alfresco on the patio and take in the wonderful views, not forgetting that the hot tub is on hand if you fancy a cheeky morning soak.

Why our guests love it:

We had a lovely stay at Brewery Barn. The property was beautifully furnished with everything anyone could need for a holiday. The beds were really comfy with quality bedding. We loved the wood-burning stove which we lit every evening. We enjoyed the hot tub every evening under the stars......bliss!” – Steven, 2023

Emley View Cottage: showing the living room, the swimming pool and an exterior image of the cottage

Emley View Cottage, Holmfirth

Sleeps 4 guests

Why we love it:

This stone cottage in the Peak District is deceptively roomy inside and its rugged exterior belies its modern and homely interior. Cosy up on the V-shaped sofa and fire up the wood burner in the corner while the chef of the group whips up something creative in the sleek kitchen. Enjoy the views of the Holme Valley as you eat on your private deck in your enclosed garden. The surrounding countryside is intoxicating and you’ll even have the chance to meet the wandering chickens! When your food has gone down, head to the heated indoor swimming pool to do a few lengths and finish the day with some relaxation time in the sauna, which is just a few steps from your door.

Why our guests love it:

“We had a wonderful, wonderful stay. We enjoyed the property, pool and grounds so much that we ended up staying in a few days rather than going out like we normally would on holiday. Toddler loved watching the horses, sheep and chickens in various neighbouring fields. We went in the pool every day – lovely that we had the freedom to splash about as much as we wanted because of the exclusive use of it. Great location near enough to lots of fun days out (walks, steam train, zoo, shops).” – Mary, 2023

Clearbrook Barn: showing an exterior image of the barn, a view of the hot tub and an image of the four-poster bed

Clearbrook Barn, Bicester Village

Sleeps 2 guests + 3 dogs

Why we love it:

Your pups will outnumber you when you book a stay at Clearbrook Barn, a 5-star romantic retreat set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens. This stylish detached timber-clad holiday home is just as magnificent inside as it is outside, with modern and luxurious interiors welcoming you as you walk through the bi-fold doors from the gravel patio. The open-plan space means you won’t have to spend a moment away from your loved one and when nighttime draws near, the four-poster bed in the vaulted bedroom is a welcome refuge. Explore the immaculate gardens in the morning, visiting the alpaca as you stroll or partaking in a game of croquet. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, open a bottle of bubbles and share it in the bubbles of the private hot tub. This top unique cottage is certainly one of our favourites.

Why our guests love it:

The cottage was absolutely gorgeous! The host was very welcoming, and decorated the place for us as it was our honeymoon, nice touch! It was really clean and all the facilities were great, the hot tub was a nice addition. The location was perfect for what we wanted, some great walks nearby and a nice local pub.” – Victoria, 2023

Weston Farm Barn: showing the vaulted ceiling bedroom, an exterior image with the hot tub in view, and an image of the lounge with its wood burner

Weston Farm Barn, Dulverton

Sleeps 2 guests + 2 dogs

Why we love it:

Another property perfect for lovebirds, this time in Devon, Weston Farm Barn is a 5-star barn conversion located on the fringes of Exmoor National Park. It’s brimming with original features including rugged exposed beams, skylights and a vaulted ceiling in the bedroom. There’s plenty of luxury on hand too with a free-standing bath and a warming wood burner to keep you cosy on chilly evenings. When the sun is out, move through the patio doors to the suntrap garden where you can read a book on the sun loungers, dine alfresco at the table or sink into the steaming hot tub as the sun descends over the horizon. You may need to get out to top up drinks but we recommend returning to gaze up at the star-filled sky as you soak away.

Why our guests love it:

“Wow Wow Wow. A truly amazing property that has everything that you need to make your holiday complete. Spotlessly clean, full of character, very well equipped and beautifully decorated in a quiet and secluded area. Ideal for exploring Exmoor and North Devon. The best property that we have stayed in. Additional touches like bubbly, chocolate, milk, eggs, wood and the bird feeders for entertainment whilst relaxing in the hot tub. Congratulations Richard and Laura on your little gem. Thank you.” – Christine, 2023

Hill View Cottage: showing the lounge, the kitchen and an exterior view of the cottage

Hill View Cottage, Isle of Purbeck

Sleeps 5 guests + 2 dogs

Why we love it:

Finishing off our list of the top cottages for 2024 is Hill View Cottage, which deserves its place due to its cute cottage interiors, south-facing enclosed garden and idyllic countryside surroundings – this certainly is one of our top rural cottages. Situated in South Dorset, this 18th-century cottage is perfectly positioned for walking and cycling routes, with the Purbeck Hills within easy reach. The flagstone flooring and exposed stone walls inside give a nod to the property’s origins but there are plenty of modern comforts to make your holiday as relaxing as possible. Light the wood burner in the living room and snuggle down with a movie on the Smart TV, then wake up the next day to enjoy breakfast in the enclosed garden to the front. There’s even a BBQ if cereal and toast just don’t do it for you.

Why our guests love it:

“Amazing experience all round. The owners are really friendly and accommodating, the cottage is excellently located, has amazing views and is really cosy. It has everything you could possibly need and is a perfect base for exploring the local and wider area.
