Why we love it:

This converted railway carriage, nestled in 16 acres of natural countryside just 3 miles from Exeter, runs on entirely renewable energy making it a highly unique and eco-friendly holiday cottage. Inside you’ll find surprisingly roomy accommodation with many original features. Not only does it run on clean energy, but local materials were used in the renovation, eco-friendly products are used in the property and guests are even welcome to offset the carbon emissions of their holiday by planting a tree during their stay.

In a rural position on the Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire border with not another property in sight, is this lovely barn conversion. The barn is totally off-grid, deriving its energy from a generator and wind turbine, and there is a charging point for electric vehicles too. Inside is cosy and characterful accommodation with some luxury touches like the cosy king-size beds, and outside is a great spot for enjoying an al fresco dinner while admiring the countryside views. Many of the Cotswolds’ popular villages and towns are within easy reach.

This striking home is located on the owners’ working farm close to Loch Leven and has more eco-credentials than we have room to list! Earth Ship has been cleverly designed to be warmed by the sun and has been built using many local and reclaimed materials, including the gymnasium floor from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The electric and the heating are sourced from two turbines and homemade solar panels and grey water is treated on the farm’s natural botanical wetland which helps nature thrive. On top of that, the accommodation is sleek and stylish, while the hot tub offers countryside views to die for.

The welcome pack of food and drink was so lovely. The beds in all rooms were very comfortable and everyone in our group talked about how well they all slept.
