A fun pastime on holidays can be seeking out old filming locations from your favourite films and TV series. Over the decades, Cornwall has been the setting and film location for quite a few big films and series, so it's not uncommon to encounter a film set of some kind or other.
One of Cornwall's most enduring TV series is the much-loved Doc Martin starring Martin Clunes as the eponymous, bad-tempered village doctor. Most of Doc Martin's scenes are filmed in one village, however, the locations used, cover the entire Duchy. There's so much to explore in Cornwall, so when you have finished researching Doc Martin locations, visit our Discover Cornwall page.

Sadly after almost 20 years and ten seasons, Doc Martin has ended in 2022. However, even though all good things must come to an end, you will always be able to stream your favourite episodes and visit Port Isaac and the places featured in this blog again and again. So where was Doc Martin filmed? Read on to discover more.
The best way to visit all the locations in this guide is to do it on a holiday in Cornwall. Why not browse our collection of Cornwall holiday accommodation so you can enjoy a location-hunting break with your loved ones?

Port Isaac
Known in the popular TV drama as the community of Portwenn, the pretty fishing village of Port Isaac in North Cornwall is the backdrop of the majority of the filming locations. This includes Doc Martin’s house and the village surgery. You can walk the familiar cobbled streets, and climb the steep hills as if you were walking right through the middle of the set. You can actually go on a Port Isaac Tour and see hidden paths, historical buildings and locations from Doc Martin.

Fern Cottage, Port Isaac
Whilst you can’t go inside Doc Martin’s quaint stone cottage, you can seek it out, have your photograph taken from the front and enjoy the picturesque views over Port Isaac harbour and the pretty village. The inside of the cottage surgery and several other exterior shooting locations are made up inside a large barn, about a mile away from Port Isaac, near Roscarrock Manor Farm.

Port Gaverne
This pretty port neighbours Port Isaac and is frequently used for exterior shots during filming. A tranquil 3-mile circular walk takes in the beautiful clifftop views between the two. Port Gaverne is also within easy distance of the upmarket surfer's village of Polzeath (find lots of things to do here), Rock, and Daymer Bay.

Pencarrow House and Gardens
Pencarrow House and Gardens near Camelford was the beautiful Georgian Manor where Doc Martin and his now wife, Louise, spent their first date together at a classical music concert in series three. The house and gardens are open to the public so you could enjoy a romantic date in the beautifully-kept gardens for yourself and discover the history and fascinating artworks inside the building.

The Old Inn, Bodmin Moor
Definitely one not to miss off the list, in the fourth series finale, the delivery of Doc Martin and Louisa’s baby was shot here. Found in the village of St Breward on Bodmin Moor, not only can you tick this filming location off your list but you can stay for a while at The Old Inn and enjoy a hearty traditional pub meal. If reading about food has made you feel hungry, take a read of our guide to places to eat and drink in Cornwall.

Doyden Castle
Known as Pentire Castle in Doc Martin, the romantic and rural Doyden Castle is found in Port Quin, a deserted natural harbour near Rock and a couple of miles south of Port Isaac, and it features heavily in the dramatic finale of series five.
The pharmacist from the village, Mrs Tishall, takes Doc Martin and Louisa’s baby to the tower in an attempt to woo the doctor - she’s expecting a romantic rendezvous, believing now that the baby is hers and Doc Martin's. The scene offers an inside shot of the magnificent Gothic windows and several breathtaking views with the imposing castle standing high upon the cliff.

St Winwalloe, Gunwalloe Cove, Lizard
Doc Martin’s widowed Aunt Joan’s funeral in series five was filmed at St Winwalloe Church in Mullion, a tiny building overlooking Gunwalloe Church Cove, which is a windswept beach on the west coast of The Lizard. The church has a peculiar structure as the tower is a separate building altogether from the main church. Situated in sand dunes, it is one of Cornwall's most unique buildings. Its graveyard is full of sailors from ships that were wrecked around the Lizard.

Other locations from Doc Martin
In series one, Doc Martin went to a health board meeting at Camelot Castle Hotel in Tintagel, and Lanteglos by Camelford Church was where Doc Martin and Louisa’s ‘almost’ wedding took place in the finale of series three. Dinnabroad Farm in St Treath, known as Dannabroad Farm in the show, was used as Aunty Joan’s farm. An acquaintance of Aunty Joan moored his boat in Padstow Harbour, while Bodmin Parkway, the Royal Cornwall Hospital and Delabole Primary School all make regular appearances too.
