  • 1600s traditional cottage located in the sleepy East Sussex village of East Dean
  • Delightful split-level enclosed garden with pretty terracing and flower beds
  • Situated within the South Downs National Park, just a mile from the beach at the Birling Gap
Property code: EHC30

Delightful character cottage situated in the historic village of East Dean within the rolling countryside of the stunning South Downs National Park, just one mile from the iconic Seven Sisters Cliffs and the Seven Sisters Country Park is just two miles away.

This property is situated within the South Downs National Park, enjoying a fantastic location on the picturesque historic village green of East Dean, a village dating back to Saxon times, set along a coastline that produced a long history of smuggling. The cottage itself used to have a network of underground tunnels which linked it to the seashore at the Birling Gap, as well as to the historic village pub which is just across the village green. For those who enjoy walking, an hour long walk through the downs brings visitors onto the shingle seashore where they can spend an afternoon rockpooling or searching for fossils, under the watchful eye of the magnificent chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters. Ideal for a family group, other places of interest within easy reach of the property include the towns of Eastbourne and Lewes, National Trust's Cuckmere Valley, Herstmonceux Castle, Birling Gap and Beachy Head across the South Downs, and Drusillas Zoo Park.

The cottage is traditional throughout, decorated with classic British themes in floral and pastel shades.  In the calming lounge,  enjoy the sunlight overlooking part of the private garden: an ideal space to sit and read or have a snooze. Or settle in the dining space featuring large ship’s timber beams distinctive of period cottages of this era, room to relax or watch TV. Leading to the lovely garden is a sunroom accessed via cottage-style stairs on the first floor or from the garden itself. Moving through to the kitchen, guests will find everything they need to prepare and enjoy their favourite dishes including a breakfast table, double oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and larder. There is a door from the kitchen to the lower terrace of the garden. Stairs lead to the first-floor accommodation where there are four bedrooms, which all enjoy views of the village green. The first of these is the master bedroom, a light-filled dual-aspect room which offers a king-size bed and a vanity sink. The second bedroom is a pretty twin room, whilst the two remaining bedrooms are both single rooms. Also on this floor, there is a shower room with large walk-in shower and WC. Several turned steps lead up from the first floor to a small sunroom which has comfortable cane furniture from which guests can relax and enjoy views over the garden, and a set of double doors from this room opens out onto steps with handrail, leading down to the first terrace of the garden. There is a further bathroom with shower over bath and WC, leading off the garden room.

The property benefits from delightfully spacious gardens which are fully enclosed and are spread out over several pretty, terraced areas surrounded by foliage and flowers, linked by steep stone steps which are waiting to be explored. The owners have provided a table and chairs here so that guests can enjoy the simple pleasure of al fresco dining in the tranquil surroundings, plus some benches on which to relax and take in the garden air. The lower lawned area is easily accessed from the garden room or kitchen. There is some unrestricted roadside parking close to the property, and a free car park next to the village pub, a two-minute walk away. Please note that guests are asked kindly to refrain from using the residents parking spaces.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

Beautiful location with great walks from the door. The house was spacious, welcoming and comfortable. Our party consisted of four adults a baby and three dogs, we all agree that we had everything we needed for a very enjoyable stay.

Lovely cottage ideal for our needs as a group of 6 friends getting together for New Year. Plenty of space to sit around and relax. Kitchen well equipped to cook for 6. Fabulous location in a beautiful ancient village. Access to wonderful walking trails right from the door. Local pub and Thai restaurant both good.

Great location and fundamentals of property were good.

Glebe Cottage is excellently situated, right on the village green opposite a fine old pub. We appreciated the garden - so pretty with cottage garden plants and various seating areas. Having two separate sitting rooms really helped out family arrangements - some watching TV in one and some playing cards and reading in the ' quiet room'. As for the aRead morerea! If you like the South Downs they really are on the doorstep. There is nothing not to like. Hide
