Former residence of Charles Dickens and his family: an attractive period cottage offering accommodation for seven guests situated in the pretty seaside village of Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight’s south coast.

This property is located in the attractive seafront village of Bonchurch, a quiet retreat next to the popular neighbouring town of Ventnor. The shingle beach here is a lovely place to enjoy picnics and to explore the marine life in the rockpools. The village pub is a welcoming place to enjoy homecooked meals or simply relax with afternoon drinks in the pretty courtyard garden. Half a mile along the coast, the larger, busier seaside town of Ventnor has a wide sandy beach with a seafront pub at one end and a number of shops and kiosks selling ice creams and beach paraphernalia. The town is also home to Ventnor Botanic Gardens with its upmarket restaurant and collection of diverse plants, which makes a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

On arrival at this attractive cottage, guests will find that the welcoming lounge offers the perfect place to relax and unwind after their journey. In this semi-open-plan room comfortable sofas sit under the beamed ceiling, next to the stone fireplace, whilst there is a TV/DVD providing entertainment in the evenings. Next to the lounge, the dining room is a great spot for spending time together over leisurely meals, whilst there is also a second dining space in the kitchen which is equipped with an oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, and dishwasher. A separate utility room, meanwhile, houses the washer/dryer. Two of the property’s bedrooms are also located on the ground floor, including a double room which boasts patio doors opening out onto a terraced seating area. The second ground-floor bedroom is restful twin room, and there is also a ground-floor shower room with a walk-in shower and WC. The remaining two bedrooms can be found upstairs: another double room with co-ordinating pine furniture, and a peaceful single room. The bathroom on the first floor has a bath with handheld shower and WC. Please be aware that there are some internal steps between rooms on the ground floor of the cottage.

To the front of the property there is a delightful walled courtyard, whilst the rear garden offers terraced seating areas with garden furniture making it a pleasant spot to sit out and enjoy alfresco drinks during the warmer months of the year. There is off-road driving parking available for two cars in front of the main house.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

This cottage was well below the standard we would have expected. The double mattress downstairs was collapsed on the one side, you could feel the springs. It was almost impossible to adjust the heat in the shower, it would alter while showering, giving a risk of scolding. There is no shaver socket, just the holes in the mirror unit where one is supRead moreposed to be. Both the gravelled front garden and rear terrace garden are full of weeds. The garden furniture on the terrace also needs replacing. Hide

The house is well positioned for good access to great island landmarks and lovely beaches. The house was very clean, good attention to detail, very comfy beds. Linen could do with replacing though. We suggested some things that would make the stay more comfortable, such as a washing line and access to a hoover (we have a dog). Be aware the walk to Read morethe shingle beach is just 5 mins but is a climb up but manageable. We enjoyed the coastal walk straight from the house. Hide

A delightfully quiet cottage in a superb location close to the sea, also a very short stroll to Bonchurch or a reasonable walk into Ventnor town. Also virtually on the Coastal Path with fantastic walks to Shanklin/Sandown or to Ventnor Gardens.

The cottage was perfect for us...5 adults and a baby. The layout meant the baby and her parents had the upstairs bedrooms whilst the rest of us were in the downstairs rooms separated by the lounge, kitchen and 3 ft walls! Perfect! The garden was secure for the dogs and it was very quiet.

The configuration of the cottage was very suitable for our family (3 generations). The cottage provided sufficient space for our family of 6 people, together with a good degree of internal and external privacy. The cottage was peaceful and quiet, but lacked a distant view.

Beautiful, peaceful cottage. Ideal for relaxation. Walking distance from the sea and Ventnor. Very well equipped kitchen: the washer and drier made looking after two babies very easy, as did the cottage layout.

This is a really lovely house and the lay out of the house was great for our set up. We had a very comfortable stay. There are some mild recommendations that would make the stay nicer which I have given to the owner but nothing that would change my mind about staying. The location of this house is beautiful and is a short but steep walk to the coasRead moret. It's a great base to explore the rest of the Island with local supermarkets etc a short drive away. Hide
