This charming cottage on Loch Linnhe is the perfect rural retreat for a family looking to enjoy the natural environment and enjoy a whole array of outdoor activities.

Loch Linnhe offers stunningly wild scenery and plenty of outdoor activities for the whole family. Whether you enjoy simply walking alongside the sea and taking in the views, or prefer something more active, this is the ideal location. Heading north to Fort William (15 miles), which sits beneath Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, you will discover several outdoor activity centres. From the adrenalin rush of white-water rafting to spotting golden eagles on a leisure cruise on the loch, there is something for everyone. A unique way to enjoy the stunning natural landscape is by steam train - enjoy a nostalgic ride on The Jacobite from Fort William to Mallaig to take in the magnificent views. Alternatively, take one of the many boat trips available on the loch – sit back and relax and watch out for dolphins, seals, red deer and golden eagles.

Enter this pretty, whitewashed cottage through the front door and you will find yourself in a lovely open-plan sitting/dining/kitchen area. The smart, contemporary kitchen is well-equipped with everything you might need for creating some tasty meals, and there is a handy breakfast bar where you can sit and enjoy a coffee before heading out to the hills. The dining table sits in one corner and the lounge area is invitingly arranged around a wood burner. With two soft and welcoming sofas and a large armchair, this is a cosy spot to kick back after a day in the fresh air. Throw another log on the wood burner and enjoy the glow on your toes. Next door, the utility room has a handy washing machine and tumble dryer. There are three lovely bedrooms; two doubles – one with a smart en-suite shower room – and a twin, all with crisp, fresh cotton bedding, lovely views and plenty of storage space. In addition, there is a family bathroom with a bath, handbasin and WC.

Outside, the cottage is surrounded by a large lawn and there is a large gravelled area to the front where you can sit and enjoy the peace of the surrounding hills and woodland. Safely enclosed, it is ideal for keeping children and pets safe.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

The house and its location are fantastic, everything you need is provided and it was spotlessly clean. There are fantastic walks from the doorstep and spectacular scenery throughout the region. Can't wait to go back.

The location of this house is simply stunning. Really enjoyed staying here, as did our 3 daughters. So much, that we are coming back next year. Also loved feeding the horses and the deer and seeing otters and seals.

Lovely cottage, has all the basics required. Cosy and comfy very traditional. The surroundings are beautiful and lots of wildlife to be seen. If you want to get away from it all then it's perfect. We really enjoyed it but the kids were a bit miffed the WiFi didn't work but that's what happens when you are in a remote location.

Shepherd's House was a remote spot which was great! Friendly welcome from the estate manager who gave us some local tips. House was great for a base, and enclosed garden was good for kids and dog (though beware of tics!) There was even a friendly deer that visited most days. Internet did not work during our stay, though we managed fine without. WatRead moreer was peat stained - so if that bothers you bring bottled, but is uv filtered so safe to use. Good wee store several miles away which was well stocked. We had great day trips put to Glenfinnan, Mull and some nearby woods and an animal hide. Hide

Clean and comfortable, well-equipped house. Friendly welcome by estate manager Harvey. Huge variety of day trips from the house. We particularly enjoyed a trip to Iona, Ardnamurchan lighthouse and sailing on the loch. We recommend eating out at Strontian Inn if you want a break from self-catering.

After a long journey from Cornwall, the Shepherd's House was an absolute joy to find. The location is beautiful with incredible mountain/loch views, a peaceful setting and a contemporary, comfortable and spacious place to stay. Harvey was brilliant, friendly and helpful and the farm setting was secluded (no traffic noise) yet with easy access to thRead moree main roads around the area. The cottage has everything we could wish for and is so well equipped including a handy cloakroom area for drying boots/coats with ample hanging space and massive wardrobes. Immaculately clean and perfect for a couple or family, it was relaxing just to sit on the sofa and watch the changing light on the mountains and although our weather was mostly wet, it was warm and inviting to return to. Even had a delightful visitor, a deer 'Deerdre' who enjoyed our carrots. The mountain water is 'peaty' brown but it feels healthy and is safe to drink! The village of Strontian has a fabulous 'Strontian Hotel/Bothy Bar' that serves superb food. The Glencoe Gathering serves the best haddock and chips in the world. The Corran Ferry (free to us as my husband is registered disabled) was straightforward to use too. The location is excellent for walking, running, sports and sightseeing for Glencoe/Fort William and the Ardnamurchan Peninsula and Lighthouse (awesome but challenging 40 mile drive on single track road with exquisite views - well worth the journey). There's even a beach within a few minutes' walk! It felt like paradise for us - the best holiday cottage we've ever stayed in. We LOVED our week there and were sorry to leave. Hide
