At a glance

  • Beautifully and sympathetically restored and furnished to reflect its period Welsh cottage charm
  • A cosy bolthole in a woodland haven, perfect for a romantic break
  • Only 1.5 miles from the market town of Brecon yet nestled in a fairy-tale setting surrounded by a rich variety of flora and fauna
Property code: BN368

Over the years the intrepid and the artistic have sought solace and creative refuge in this woodland haven. Situated along a single road beside The River Usk, enjoy the best of both worlds from village amenities to rural peace and quiet. Set on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, this cottage is perfect for walking enthusiasts with breath-taking landscapes to be enjoyed from riverside to mountain peak. Follow Captain's Walk and see the remains of Brecon's medieval walls or visit the South Wales Borderers Museum at Brecon Barracks. Steeped in history find some of Europe’s finest surviving castles, Brecon Castle overlooking the River Usk, Abergavenny Castle set against the spectacular hills and Crickhowell Castle a prominent feature within a small market town. The estate has 2 miles of double bank fishing for 4 rods for trout or salmon booked through the Wye & Usk foundation 'Fennifach' Beat and for this reason and because fishermen value undisturbed fishing almost above all other qualities, you are asked to avoid the riverside within the estate woodland as much as possible during the fishing season (March to October inc.) and not to enter the water at all within the estate boundaries at any time..

Enjoy the best of both worlds with central heating, underfloor heating downstairs and a wood burner making the cottage warm and comfortable but still retaining a great deal of its character with exposed beams, curved walls, wooden lintels, wooden stairs and old oak floorboards upstairs. The cottage kitchen has the original flagstone floors, a Belfast sink, an electric cooker and hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, washing machine and a kitchen table and chairs. The cosy living room still has the large original fireplace where the wood burner crackles, perfect to relax in front of with a DVD whilst snuggled on the sofa. The charming bathroom is downstairs and has a stylish, walk-in shower and a freestanding period roll top bath. Up some fairly steep wooden stairs you reach a large landing with a single bed tucked in the corner, a room walked through to reach the master bedroom. A lovely and romantic bedroom with a king-size bed, the beautiful linen and traditional furniture befits the period of the house whilst the windows peep out over the woodland.

There is plenty of outside space with visitors free to explore the surrounding 200 acres of mixed woodland but subject to the request at the end of paragraph 2 above, concerning the river. There is a small terraced area for table and chairs and BBQ in a natural garden setting, perfect for indulging in a spot of outdoor dining morning, noon and night, enjoying the peace and tranquility. There is a shop, pub and restaurant 1.5 miles away.

This is one of my favourite cottages I've stayed at. The pictures don't do it justice. The cottage is situated in its own private woodland and peaceful surroundings. The cottage bodes charm and original features such as the inglenook fireplaces. Downstairs has heated floors that makes the cottage feel even more cosy. Clean, authentic cottage located in peacful woodland. Most comfortable bed we have slept in in all of the cottages we have previously stayed in. Fresh, crisp bed linen also a plus. Friendly local people in Brecon. Unfortunately had lots of rain during our stay so lots of mud around, but didn't stop us exploring the area.

An absolute gem of a cottage, remote, comfortable and extremely cozy, the underfloor heating was a dream. So nice to stay somewhere so peaceful with lovely walks close by and also within driving distance, after years of cottage holidays up and down the country this one is most definitely our favourite so far.

Amazing traditional cottage. Beautifully warm and cosy. Loved how the traditional features had been kept but with all the home comforts. It was so peaceful and relaxing. Lovely walks straight from the cottage door.

If youre lucky enough to book this cottage you are in for a real treat. Set with in a private forest and away from the general public the location is outstanding. This is exactly what we needed and a step away from the rat race. The cottage is warm and comfortable with out losing its old world charm. I could waffle on for pages and still miss loadsRead more out as words are never enough,so my only advice would be book up as soon as possible. This is my totally unbiased opinion .Steve Willis Hide

A lovely, cosy cottage in an amazing location. Handy for lots of walking, and a wonderful location to relax after an active day. Lots of wildlife, especially birds, in the local area. Brecon is handy for shopping, beer and eating out. The cottage stairs are steep, but the handrail is helpful. Walks in the local woods are a must, and the Ghurka TraiRead morel route into Brecon is a great alternative to walking the lanes (during the day). Hide
