Take the car ferry across to Hill Top House, 3.5 miles away, the beautifully conserved former home of Beatrix Potter and continue to traffic-free Hawkshead, 5.5 miles away, with its whitewashed houses and charming cafes. Visit the smaller peaceful lake of Grasmere, 8 miles away, being sure to sample some of its famous gingerbread, together with neighbouring Ambleside, home to shops, restaurants, a cinema and one of the most photographed houses in the Lake District.
