Property code: 86615

Forming part of an award-winning mill conversion, this sympathetically finished three-storey town house is nestled in the rugged Clydach gorge, yet is just 200 metres from Gilwern village centre.

Gilwern is a traditional village with pubs, shops, and a picturesque canal. It sits on the edge of the Blaenavon World Heritage site, and you can enjoy country walks right from your doorstep or visit the historic town of Abergavenny (4 miles) full of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes. Nearby are galleries, museums, castles and a vineyard, or hire a narrowboat; you can see the viaduct crossing the Clydach just a little way up the gorge. Other attractions in the area include Blaenavon Iron Works (7 miles), The Big Pit National Coal Museum (7 miles), the Brecon Beacons Visitor Centre (22 miles), horse riding, mountain biking, climbing, and kayaking on the Usk and Wye. This three storey property is part of a converted textile mill, originally powered by a water wheel. The water wheel is gone, but the sound of water is ever-present.

The property is in a sheltered position that catches the winter sun, there is also a shaded area of decking to the rear for hot weather. The main access is to the front of the property where you will enter into the kitchen/dining area, a spacious room with areas for relaxing or dining and a well-equipped kitchen with an electric oven, gas hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washer/dryer. There is a utility room which is a great space for muddy boots, a shower and WC. The stairs to the first floor lead you to a spacious lounge with a Juliette balcony overlooking the river, and French doors to the shady rear terrace. The lounge has a distinct retro vibe,  with low, comfortable sofas, a TV with Freeview satellite channels and a vintage stereo. The stairs offer access to the second floor where you will find a generous double bedroom and a small bunk bedroom with standard single bunk beds. The main shower room and WC are also on this floor.

To the front of the property, a small suntrap terrace with tables and benches is cordoned off from the communal paved area where you can enjoy a morning coffee or listen to birdsong or the river meandering by. There is allocated parking for two cars at the end of the driveway.

We really enjoyed our stay at Flannel House. The property was very spacious and well equipped. The location is excellent and it's easy to get to nearby attractions. Despite having a week of torrential rain we found plenty of places to visit and managed to stay fairly dry. Lots of walks nearby to enjoy in drier weather.

A great house for a trip to Wales. Location is good for local tourist attraction. The village has a choice of pubs and is well placed for a walk along the canal. The house was well equipped and very spacious. Record player, games, books and DVDs all produced. Parking was convenient just behind the building. A very comfortable and well equipped cottage. Bunk beds were fine for adults but access to the bedrooms would be quite difficult for someone with mobility issues. Location was good although we were not informed that one of the access roads to the cottage is blocked by a temporary (?) barrier.

Sofa not very comfortable. Far too low. Lovely spot by the stream. It felt like you was in the countryside, but a short walk brings you to a lovely little town.

What a wonderful gem. This home felt traditional in its style, with a wonderful living space. Quiet and relaxing. If you want shiny and all things modern this may not be for you but I loved it.
