The local shops, pubs and tearooms are just 500 metres away, as is Alfriston Clergy House, the first National Trust property. Keen walkers can explore the many trails that the South Downs has to offer, with a choice of local pubs to stop off at for refreshments on the way. For those who want to explore slightly further afield, the much-photographed Birling Gap is only 8 miles away, where walks along the Sussex coastline can be enjoyed. Families with children will love a day out at nearby Drusillas (1 mile) where you can visit the lemurs and meerkats.

Enter this welcoming cottage where there is space for dropping off coats and shoes before heading through the main hallway into the dual aspect lounge which offers the ideal spot for curling up in front of the Smart TV to catch up on your favourite TV programmes or just enjoy a good book in the armchair as you overlook the pretty garden. A handy desk also provides a useful space for catching up on emails when needed. Heading back through the hallway from the lounge, there is a separate dining area which is perfect for entertaining or enjoying a family evening of board games in front of the wood burner. Next to the dining area, you will find the kitchen which is equipped with everything that you may need for whipping up delicious meals and opens out into a wonderful, light-filled conservatory with a further dining table and chairs for more relaxed mealtimes. Completing the ground floor is a shower room. Heading upstairs, you will find three good size bedrooms: one king size with a smart TV, one double and a twin. The Jack and Jill family bathroom also acts as an en-suite to the master bedroom.

Heading outside, there is a fully enclosed garden with a patio table and chairs, charcoal BBQ and a charming seating set – perfect for enjoying outside entertaining during the summer months.

The cottage is lovely, beautiful location as only minutes to Alfriston village. The conservatory does not have blinds and has a glass roof so gets extremely hot, so could only use it in the evening if cooler. The cottage was well presented, had all homely comforts and was in an excellent position within an extremely beautiful village. We were worried about flooding leading up to travel but had nothing to worry about as it was well away from any flooding areas. We absolutely fell in love with the cottage and village.

The cottage is in a great location, 5 minutes walk from village centre and facing the recreation ground. The garden is attractive and safe for dogs Furnishings are of good quality and comfortable. It is well-equipped throughout. There is a good tv in the lounge. The conservatory is a bonus. All in all, a very enjoyable family weekend stay.

Overall a comfortable and well equipped cottage. Alfriston is a lovely but busy village and The Shieling is located a little way from the high street so is quieter but with easy reach to the village amenities.

One of the best holiday cottages we have stayed at. Spacious, cosy, warm, well equiped and well situated. We really didn't want to go home. Alfriston is a joy.
