Visit the Norman Castle and the train station, which is part of the Settle to Carlisle line. Enjoy a swim in the seasonal open-air pools at Shap or Askham, (16.5 miles) or go for a hack at one of the equestrian centres. For any golf enthusiasts there are courses in Appleby and Penrith (15 miles). Enjoy a day at Lowther Castle, paddleboard on Ullswater or take a trip on a steamer and visit Aira Force waterfall (all within 16 miles).
