Property code: OC-DOWRPE

This homely cottage in a historic village in South Cornwall is an excellent base for a family or group of friends to explore the Cornish coast. The village of Helford sits on the south bank of the Helford river between the Lizard and Falmouth, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Enjoy a meal out at the cosy local pub or enjoy breakfast at the cafe (both less than 0.5 miles). Explore the coast by boat or by foot and visit one of the many idyllic beaches nearby — you can get the ferry across to Grebe Beach (1.7 miles) and Helford Passage Beach (1 mile), or take a hike along the coastal path to Bosahan Cove (1 mile).

Approaching the front door of the property, you’ll be greeted by a white picket fence in front of the textured, white-painted stone cottage. Walk past the flower pots and enter the charming property. Make yourself at home in the living room, which is bursting with character from its strong wooden beamed ceiling, impressive stone fireplace with a wood burner and classic decor. At the far end of the room, there’s a glass door which opens up onto the garden. Walking through into the dining room, the influence of traditional wooden features continues — the ceiling has wooden beams, wooden flooring and a white-painted wooden door. Next to the table and chairs, there’s a large, stone, open fireplace. Walk through the archway to the kitchen, where you’ll find a neat wooden kitchen where you can prepare special meals for your guests. Also on this level is a bathroom with a shower. Upstairs, you’ll find three bedrooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom boasts a luxurious four-poster, king-size bed with romantic white drapes on each corner, a wooden dressing table and a wooden beamed ceiling. Inside the second bedroom, you’ll find twin beds and the third bedroom has a single bed. Run yourself a steamy bath and relax in the bathroom which has a spa-like feel.

The tranquil paved garden area sits on the edge of a trickling creek. Listen to the sound of the flowing water as you sit back on the garden chairs while tucking into your BBQ food.

When we arrived there was water running down the road outside clearly not a new problem. The water pressure in the cottage was really low and you could hear the constant running of water to fill the tank. I am not sure how the housekeeping team could not notice this. We reported it and a plumber came but it did mean we had no water for anything forRead more a while and no shower. This was followed by no hot water the next day so two days disrupted. The plumber was great and not his fault but I think all this could have been avoided. It did upset our week. Hide

Dowr Penty is a beautifully presented property in a prime location in the pretty village of Helford. It also benefits from a parking area which is a real bonus. We have quite a large vehicle but could have easily got a smaller car in the space too. A nice quiet sitting out area is located behind the parking spaces by the small stream. The cottage Read morehad everything provided we could possibly need. The kitchen is fabulous and is very well equipped, clean with modern appliances. Instructions are provided in a folder on how to work everything which is very helpful. The upstairs bathroom is fabulous but there is also the added bonus of a downstairs wet room with shower, loo and wash basin. The bed was extremely comfortable and the linen and towels provided were spotlessly clean. The cottage is a credit to its owners and the people who make it ready for the guests each week. This is a highly recommended property. Hide

Had a lovely Christmas at Dowr Penty. My husband and I stayed here many years ago and the improvements that have been made were lovely especially the kitchen bathroom and now the extra shower room which is much better for four/five guests.

We have had the most wonderful week in this lovely cottage, our 9th visit to Helford but the first staying in Dowr Penty. Loved the kitchen and bathrooms, so well equipped and great quality. Two enjoyable meals in the Shipwrights and fish and chips from Sids van in Manaccan Tuesday evening, to be recommended. We have had yet another wonderful stay in this lovely cottage in such a special place. This is the earliest in the year that we have visited, and we have really enjoyed the beautiful hedgerows and woodland at this point in Spring. The weather has been especially kind, with sunny days every day, so we have spent lots of time in the water, on the wRead moreater, and on the beaches. Have thoroughly enjoyed our favourite walks including the Frenchmans Creek loop via Kestle Barton, the loop to St. Anthonys (coming back along the coast path), and Durgan to Maenporth loop. We all so treasure our annual trip to Dowr Penty thank you. Hide

Our fourth visit to Dowr Penty and our first since 2019. New kitchen is excellent! (and new mattress in the main bedroom). First time down in 'spring'. So much quieted than the October half term - love the peace and quiet. Always cosy, warm and welcoming - log fire is a must. Revisited our favourites this week: Frenchmans Creek; Sid Rosevears FisRead moreh & Chip van in Manaccan (4.30-7.30pm Tuesday); Mullion Cove; St. Anthonys & Gillian Creek; Loe Bar; Pendower Beach on Rodeland (over the fal on the King Merry Ferry); Pizza in the Shipwrights! (veggie pizza recommended). Already looking forward to our fifth visit!! Hide

Beds could benefit from having mattress toppers as were a bit uncomfortable but that is the only criticism.

Dowr Penty is a charming well equipped cottage which we would definitely recommend.
