Upmarket Aldeburgh sits at the centre of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a charming coastal town full of traditional buildings and on-trend shops, eateries and galleries. This is where, in 1577, Sir Francis Drake’s ship The Golden Hind was built, and it’s the place that composer and artist Benjamin Britten called home. The pebbly beach is perfect for coastal walks – the boats that are hauled out of the surf here are a reminder of Aldeburgh’s centuries-old fishing industry, while a stroll towards Thorpeness (2 miles) will take you past Maggi Hambling’s famous statue ‘The Scallop’. Further up the coast, bustling Southwold is 18 miles away, while 11 miles to the south is Orford, home to a 12th-century castle keep and the captivating Orford Ness nature reserve.
Dating from 1854, this much-loved seaside property occupies one of the best positions in Aldeburgh, beside Crag Path and directly opposite the long pebbly beach. A reverse-level layout means that there is a handy utility room alongside two traditionally styled, spacious bedrooms on the ground floor. The first of these has a king-size bed and en-suite shower room while the second has twin beds and en-suite bathroom. On the upper floor, a bay window with built-in seating makes the most of the glorious views that can be enjoyed from the sitting room – the seascape beyond is ever-changing! Inviting sofas and a TV suggest companionable evenings to be enjoyed here, while in the kitchen/dining area there are all the home-from-home essentials and plenty of elbow space for four to eat in comfort. A first-floor cloakroom adds to the convenience of a holiday here.
Watch the world go by from the small enclosed patio area to the front of the property or take just a few steps onto the path that edges Aldeburgh’s much-photographed pebble beach… for a holiday memory to treasure, set an alarm and watch the sun rise over the sea!
