Hadrian's Wall is nearby with the forts of Birdoswald (6 miles), Housesteads (15.5 miles) and Vindolanda (14 miles) all within a short drive. The North Pennines are equally accessible (within 28 miles), an area is justly described as ‘England's Last Wilderness’ and righty designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Part of this area is the RSPB Geltsdale Reserve (3.5 miles), home to black grouse, birds of prey and wading birds. It is ideal for walking with four way-marked trails, a parking area and a visitor centre. The market town of Brampton is just 2 miles with a good range of shops and amenities, whilst the city of Carlisle is just 10 miles.
