Property code: OC-DS779

An attractive semi-detached Grade II-listed property in the heart of cobbled Askrigg, it’s the ideal base for families or couples to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park. For the walkers, there are many footpaths around the village to roam - the climb up Mill Gill is a local favourite – and the infamous Three Peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside are all within reach. Once renowned for its clock makers, several fine examples of former Askrigg residents' work are on display at the Dales Countryside Museum in nearby Hawes, 5 miles away. The village is famous for its association with fictional vet James Herriot and was the setting for Darrowby in the television series All Creatures Great and Small. You’ll never go thirsty or hungry here with Askrigg well-served by 3 pubs, a brewery, a tearoom and a deli. Don't forget to look up at night; the Yorkshire Dales is home to some of the darkest skies in the country, where it’s possible to see the Milky Way, planets, meteors and even the Northern Lights.

This is a home full of rural charm where thick walls and solid woodwork have withstood the test of time. There are a wealth of original features such as stone flags, planked floors and doors, and beamed ceilings. The cottage has a small entrance porch with space for coats and boots leading to the stone-flagged front room with its two comfy settees, Sky-enabled flat-screen TV, and warming multi-fuel stove. A storage cupboard houses tourist information, DVDs, book and games to keep you entertained throughout your stay. Off the living room and at the front of the house is the cosy stone-flagged dining room with its traditional old round table, chairs, and antique dresser. Also, off the living room is the original stone-shelved scullery for the cottage, now a functional pantry and utility room. At the rear of the house is the lovely hand-built kitchen with a Rayburn stove (straightforward to operate). Upstairs are two charming and spacious bedrooms with single beds on the first floor, along with the family shower room with a modern power shower and feature wooden wall. The master bedroom is up a further flight of stairs, tucked away at the top of the cottage, and offers stunning views of the hills beyond. This romantic bedroom features a king-size bed on a raised dais under a heavily beamed ceiling.

The property's back door leads across a grassed area belonging to the house next door, to the old barn behind the cottage, and through this to your private south-facing walled garden. The barn gives ample storage space for outdoor gear and bikes, and the hidden cottage garden is a real sun trap with a raised patio area and garden furniture.

Great place to stay at the centre of the village, with great shops and pubs within walking distance. The only downside would be the Rayburn cooker and heating system which burns oil and very tempremental.

A great location in this wonderful town. Right opposite Skeldale House [All Creatures 1977], with quality, welcoming pubs very close by. Askrigg is well located for ventures to all compass points on foot or by road. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

We had a lovely time at the West End Cottage in Askrigg. The cottage is very well equipped. It has everything you may need on your holiday. The bedrooms are very comfortable. The bathroom is modern with underfloor heating. There's also wood-burner which was handy when we visited at the beginning of March. The logs and everything you will need for iRead moret was already there too. Tea, coffee and biscuits were a nice touch and made us feel welcome. The location is amazing with great walks on your doorstep. There are three pubs within walking distance serving delicious food and drinks. I truly recommend this cottage to anyone. My friends and I are already thinking of returning soon to this beautiful cottage. Hide

West End Cottage is very nice. Everything you need is available. There are just two points to mention in my opinion: 1.) The parking situation is bit difficult. Especially on day of arrival or departure it's not comfortable to carry the baggage hundreds of meters from the cottage to the car or the other way around. 2.). The table in the dining roRead moreom could be replaced im my opinion. The surface is very rough and difficult to keep clean and the tabletop wiggles if somebody leans on it. Hide
