Make yourself at home in this colourful, characterful cottage on an historic street in the charming fishing village of Appledore on the North Devon Coast. The property is opposite the quay where kids can have fun trying crabbing with a backdrop of the estuary, looking across to Instow, Crow Point and the sea, while the town’s cobbled alleys are 150 metres away so you can easily meander through the independent shops and art galleries, sampling local ice cream, fish and chips and Devon cream teas. Enjoy outdoor adventures all together by walking the scenic South West Coast Path which runs through Appledore or catching the ferry to Instow, a short trip away, for a glorious family beach day.
Leave your shoes in the ground-floor entrance porch and enter the living room that’s made for relaxation with its comfy seating, wood burner-effect electric fire in a feature fireplace, original artwork and plenty of entertainment such as the Smart TV. The kitchen/diner feels rustic and generous with two ovens for cooking family dinners, which you can enjoy at the large oak table. When you’ve finished, retire to the reclining chair just beside it. This downstairs area feels bright and spacious thanks to the large internal window looking into the lounge and the French doors that lead to the courtyard. There’s also a cupboard under the stairs to hang coats. Climb the stairs to the first floor to find two king-size bedrooms and a twin bedroom. All but one have decorative feature fireplaces. The luxurious bathroom, featuring a bath and a separate shower, is impressive with marble-effect walls and historic wooden floorboards that are thought to be from the decking of an old ship.
Outside, enjoy some private peace in the fresh air in the enclosed courtyard which has a small table and chairs, a bench and hanging baskets with colourful flowers. There’s a small outbuilding with a handy WC plus storage for crabbing buckets and fishing nets. Head to the beach at Instow, a family favourite great for swimming and kayaking (1 mile by foot and ferry). Westward Ho! (2.5 miles) beach has two miles of sands to explore and is ideal for rock pooling, body boarding and surfing. Go crabbing at the quay (about 200 metres away), explore the area’s history at the North Devon Maritime Museum, and play a round at the Royal North Devon Golf Club (2 miles), the oldest course in England. Pick up the South West Coast Path in the village for a picturesque walk along the River Taw then head along the coast.
