An ancient market town dating from Saxon times, Sudbury was once an important part of the nation’s weaving and silk industries. It’s known as the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough whose paintings, along with those of fellow artist John Constable, were inspired by the water meadows and countryside which surround the town. Today, Sudbury is home to independent shops, restaurants and bars, as well as the Gainsborough’s House museum and gallery. The town’s traditional mix of architecture includes Victorian terraces, Georgian manor houses, spectacular medieval timber-framed halls and churches and some 19th-century silk weavers’ cottages. Favourites among antique aficionados, Cavendish, Lavenham and Clare are all less than 9 miles away while Colchester, the former capital of Roman Britain, is 15 miles.
