Escape to the coastal edge of the Exmoor National Park and discover the twin villages of Lynmouth – where rows of stone-built cottages and shops cluster around a historic harbour – and, perched high above it, the Victorian resort of Lynton. The two are connected by the water-powered cliff railway; enjoy stunning views of the coastline as you glide up and down the 260 metres of track, or for more scenic thrills head to the nearby Valley of the Rocks, where the cliffs are some of the highest in Britain. If you’d prefer to explore on foot, both the Tarka Trail and South West Coast Path run through Lynmouth, or you could follow the course of the Lyn River upstream to the former fishing lodge of Watersmeet House. Woolacombe Beach, 21 miles away, is a vast stretch of golden sands while Ilfracombe – fast-gaining a reputation as a cultural and culinary centre – is less than 20 miles.
This impressive first-floor holiday home is in the east wing of an early 1800s gentleman’s residence. Steps guide guests to a private entrance at the side of the building which leads into an airy open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, all flooded with light thanks to a high apex ceiling and large Victorian skylight. Lovely leather furnishings and sleek kitchen cabinets evoke the grandeur of the property’s past, while every modern convenience is provided, including a range-style cooker and Smart TV. A small side-room creates a place perhaps for quiet time, while steps lead down to an additional lounge that has a day bed for flexible sleeping and more space where guests can relax or even work if necessary. Leading off this room, two gorgeous bedrooms – each with its own TV – guarantee a good night’s sleep however busy the day has been. The first has a beautiful carved wooden king-size bed, its own balcony offering magnificent sea views, and an en-suite bathroom. The second has a bed that can be either a super-king or two singles and has lovely sea views. A separate shower room completes the home-from-home convenience.
A private pebbled patio to the side of the building, backed by trees, is a lovely spot to sit and take in the sea views, while the balcony off the master bedroom is furnished bistro-style and ideal for morning drinks or nightcaps.
