Ashford-in-the-Water is perhaps best known for its Sheepwash Bridge which has been awarded the coveted accolade of being the best bridge for playing Poohsticks in the country by Visit England! The village lies just north of Bakewell, and while the Sheepwash Bridge itself is indeed a truly scenic spot, there are another two bridges and an array of limestone cottages and pretty gardens making it a beautiful place to stay.
The village’s picture-postcard appearance hides its past as a centre for mining of Ashford Black Marble, though if you head for the church of Holy Trinity you can see some prime examples.
Ashford-in-the-Water offers plenty of choice for food and drink, with a traditional tearoom, a pub and a restaurant to choose from. As for amenities, there is a good village shop, so you needn’t venture far to pick up the necessities for a quiet evening in. If you’re lucky enough that your visit coincides with the annual Well Dressing celebrations in June, you’ll be treated to some awe-inspiring floral displays around the village.
There’s much to explore in the area, including taking in the breathtaking views from Monsal Head, wandering along the pretty Monsal Trail, or watching the cricketers playing in the summer on the banks of the river. Nearby Bakewell (1.5 miles) is a beautiful town of gorgeous stone buildings, great shopping and a lovely location for a riverside stroll, not to mention a taste of the famous Bakewell Pudding.
