Aislaby, just 3 miles from Whitby, is a long village of stone-built houses overlooking the River Esk and has views across the valley to the far side of the village of Sleights. Many of the properties are built from stone from the local quarry, including our Aislaby holiday cottages. The Aislaby Quarry was reopened in 2002 and supplies some of the finest sandstone for buildings in London as well as English seaside piers. It is a quiet village but boasts a popular inn which provides good bar meals. The nearest shops, including a family-run butcher, a family-run baker and a Post Office, are in Sleights, less than a mile away, down the beautifully named Featherbed Lane.
The closest town to our Aislaby cottages is Whitby. Here, you can enjoy the heritage, quaint shops and, of course, the fish and chips in this jewel of the Yorkshire coast. Climb the 199 steps and visit Whitby Abbey, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Further down the coast is Scarborough, a bustling resort where you can experience traditional seaside activities as well as the numerous events at the Scarborough Spa, the Outdoor Theatre and the Stephen Joseph Theatre, the UK’s first theatre in the round. Whilst you are here, don't miss taking in some of the picturesque villages along the coastline. Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Runswick Bay are all worth a visit. The nearby North York Moors National Park is close by offering a completely different landscape with the largest expanse of heather moorland in England.
