Just 20 miles from Inverness, the town of Alness shares some of the city’s lively nature, while still offering peace, quiet and proximity to the countryside. An attractive highland town, it is close to the north shore of the Cromarty Firth and boasts two malting distilleries, offering visitors the chance to try a local tipple during their break.
Keen golfers are attracted to Alness for its golf club, which sits within a landscape of rolling hills, offering a course which is as varies as it is beautiful. Throughout the Highlands, there are 46 golf courses, so once you’ve practised your swing at one, you can move onto the next and enjoy an alternative tour of the Highlands!
Other activities in and around the town of Alness include fishing, bowling, swimming and, of course, walking. The walk up to the Fyrish Monument is one of the most renowned routes, noted for the awe-inspiring views from the top. You needn’t challenge yourself with hill walking unless the mood takes you though, there are walks around the town and in the surrounding countryside to suit all abilities.
In the town itself, one of the highlights is the Dalmore Distillery, which can be visited on the shores of the Cromarty Firth. During one of their tours, you’ll be treated to a taste of their Single Malt whisky and discover the expertise and craft that goes into producing each drop. The town’s second whisky producer, Teaninch Distillery, lies on the other side of the River Averon and while there are no tours, the best way to discover this whisky is to taste it for yourself!
It's not all about drink, though. Alness has a variety of eateries and a good selection of shops within its attractive town centre, which is known for its floral displays and town gardens. A stay in one of our holiday cottages in Alness will leave you perfectly positioned for exploring the town and the area around Cromarty Firth.
