The small town of Alva sits immediately south of the impressive Ochil Hills, offering excellent views across the countryside and sea. The town’s history is rooted in the textile industry, and there is still a working mill producing knitwear which is for sale at the Mill Trail and Visitor Centre. To discover more of the area’s history, visitors can walk from town through Alva Glen, a peaceful green space dotted with waterfalls and the ruins of abandoned mills.
After a long walk, relax in one of the town's pubs and sample a beer from the local Harviestoun Brewery. In the summer, Alva is home to the last Highland games in the region, the Alva Games, which has taken place in the town for over 150 years.
There are many attractions within easy reach for a day trip, not least two of Scotland’s vibrant cities: Stirling (8 miles) and Edinburgh (40 miles). Besides the buzz of the cities, there are numerous historic and natural places to visit, including Dumyat Hill (3.5 miles), Castle Campbell (6.5 miles) and The Pineapple summerhouse (12.5 miles).
