Barnard Castle is a historic market town which takes its name from the castle around which it grew – an English heritage property named after its 12th Century founder, Bernard de Balliol. The castle still has a prominent position in the town today and boasts tremendous views down to the tumultuous River Tees below. The town is popular with anglers, canoeists and hikers due to the rich and exciting terrain, from shaded woodlands to sparkling waters Barnard Castle is a spectacular spot to explore.
