Self-catering holiday cottages in Biggin-by-Hartington

The little village of Biggin-by-Hartington sits amongst the beautiful scenery of the White Peak area. Peaceful and rural, with access to numerous walks and natural points of interest, the village is the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Although tiny, and laid out along a single street, the village boasts a pub, church and hotel restaurant. The village was historically a stop off on several important routes, including an ancient packhorse route from Hartington to Wirksworth, and an old saltway and drover’s road. From the village, walkers can now head down the grassy trail to Biggin Dale on their way to exploring the banks of the River Dove at Wolfscote Dale.

The 13-mile Tissington Trail passes near to Biggin-by-Hartington, providing a picturesque route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders along the former railway line which ran from Buxton to Ashbourne. For adventurous walking in the beautiful scenery, ramble through the limestone dales of the Upper Dove Valley, or stay more local in Biggin Dale, of which an important section is a nature reserve.

As its full name would suggest, just down the road from Biggin is the village of Hartington, a pretty spot set within an area ripe for walking and outdoor adventure. The limestone village encompasses a delightful duck pond and a host of picturesque buildings, some of which house gift shops, cafes and pubs. Bakewell (8.5 miles), to the northeast of Biggin, shouldn’t be missed, with its honey-coloured cottages and idyllic riverside location, you could while away more than a few hours of your holiday here.
