The original bridge was destroyed in a flood in 1892 and replaced the following year. The current bridge was built in 1973. However, Bonar Bridge has returned to its sleepy state when a new bridge, the Dornoch Firth Bridge, was built 20 miles away which in turn diverted the main road network away. Nearby Ardgay is connected the national railway network, its station is on the Inverness to Thurso line, so day trips without the car could be added to an already packed holiday agenda.
