Our holiday cottages in Castle Douglas are the perfect destination for lovers of local food and local shopping. The town even has special status as a Food Town and over 50 different independent retailers and producers.
Castle Douglas is ideally placed to explore Central and Southern Scotland, plus there are some fantastic and historical attractions right on your doorstep. The Threave Estate and Gardens is one of Scotland’s most popular attractions and certainly worth a visit during your holiday. The castle stands in the middle of the River Dee and can only be reached by a short ferry trip. The impressively tall building must have been an imposing sight for attackers. Nowadays you can take a look around and keep an eye out for otters and ospreys in the river.
Beautiful Carlingwark Loch lies on the outskirts of Castle Douglas and is a lovely spot for a walk or a picnic while watching the sailing boats bob around on the water. It is dotted with little islands, perfect if you fancy taking to the water yourself to explore in a canoe or kayak.
The market town of Dumfries is 18 miles away. Filled with historic sites, it is known as the Queen of the South and is South West Scotland’s largest town. The river is its focal point – a magnet for local fishermen and a picturesque backdrop for your town explorations.
